As the cold winter __34__, the bikes are being moved into storage, but that has not stopped the organization from continuing to __35__ money in the hope of expanding the program in the coming years.

Big Red Bikes put 20 bikes on the campus for the students to use in May 2011. Six months later, 20 more were added. The hope is to finally expand the program to __36__ 100 bikes and more parking station. As the need for the program __37__, Big Red Bikes is working in a highly democratic manner to determine how to expand the program. The organization sent out a campus-wide __38__ to decide where to put future parking stations and get advice on bike models. For example, the second 20-bike addition has a __39__ different model and includes a basket. Though it is only a campus-wide program at present, it could contribute to a larger national __40__. Boris Suchkov, the finance director of Big Red Bikes, explained, “When graduates go to live somewhere else, they have this expectation that biking should be a part of life.” He added, “We believe that students who are __41__ to an environmentally sustainable transport system during their college years will be more likely to __42__ and need sustainable systems of all kinds in the future.” Ⅲ. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context. Although eye contact is a great thing and a vital tool for__43__ the quality of all your face-to-face interactions with others, it doesn’t mean that more eye contact is always better or that all eye contact is created equal. You have to do it___44___—at the right time and in the right way. You might be ___45___to make eye contact with people because you don’t think they want to make eye contact with you. And sure enough, when you look at them the first time, they ___46___. But the reason why they ’re probably looking away is that they’re thinking the same thing you did---that you don’t really want to make eye contact with them! ___47___ you made the first move, they’re still worried about __48__. But most people are just waiting for permission to get into a mutual(互相的) gaze. Studies have shown that once one person in a conversing pair starts greater eye contact, the other person will follow suit and ___49___ his or her own level of eye contact as well. In order for eye contact to be ___50___, it needs to be welcome and appropriate. When eye

contact is __51__, it goes from gazing to staring, and being stared at makes people uncomfortable. Eye contact ___52___ physiologic (生理上的) arousal—it increases brain activity and activates( 激活) the sympathetic nervous system, ___53___ a person’s heart rate and breathing. And this happens not only when you’re directly ___54___ someone’s eyes, but also when you simply feel that someone is staring at you. This arousal can be a good thing–if you and a lovely lady are looking into each other’s eyes, it can ___55___a more intense connection. But when someone fixes their gaze on you in a terrible way, it can feel as if a predator (捕猎者)is chasing you in the wild. Therefore, good eye contact is based on mutuality. As Michael Ellsberg, author of The Power of Eye Contact, puts it: “In order for eye contact to feel good, one person cannot___56___ his visual will on another; it is a ___57___ experience.”

Section B 10%

Directions: Read the following passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. (A) Taiwan police cannot decide whether to treat it as an extremely clever act of stealing or an even cleverer cheat. Either way, it could be the perfect crime, because the criminals are birds—horning pigeons! The crime begins with a telephone message to the owner of a stolen car: if you want the car back, pay up then, the car owner is directed to a park, told where to find a bird cage and how to attach money to the neck of the pigeon inside. Carrying the money in a tiny bag, the pigeon flies off. There have been at least four such pigeon pick-ups in Changwa. What at first seemed like the work of a clever stay-at-home car thief, however, may in fact be the work of an even lazier and more inventive criminal mind—one that avoid not only collecting money but going out to steal the car in the first place. Police officer Chen says that the criminal probably has pulled a double trick: he gets money for things he cannot possibly return. Instead of stealing cars, he lets someone else do it and then waits for the car-owner to place an advertisement in the newspaper asking for help. The theory is supported by the fact that, so far, none of the stolen cars have been returned. Also, the amount of money demanded under 3,000 Taiwanese dollars—seems too little for a car worth many times more. Demands for pigeon-delivered money stopped as soon as the press reported the story. And even if they start again, Chen holds little hope of catching the criminal. “We have more important things to do,” he said. 58. After the car owner received a phone call. He _______. A.went to a certain pigeon and put some money in the bag it carried B.gave the money to the thief and had his car back in a park C.sent some money to the thief by mail D.told the press about it 59. The “lazier and more inventive” criminal refers to _______.

A.the car thief who stays at home B.one of those who put the ads in the paper C.one of the policemen in Changwa D. the owner of the pigeons 60. The writer mentions the fact that “none of the stolen cars have been returned” to

show_____. A.how easily people get fooled by criminals C. the thief is extremely clever B.what Chen thinks might be correct D.the money paid is too little

61. The underlined word “they” in the last paragraph refers to _______. A. criminals C.the stolen cars B.pigeons D.demands for money

62. We may infer from the text that the criminal knows how to reach the car owners because _______. A.he reads the ads in the newspaper B.he lives in the same neighborhood

C.he has seen the car owners in the park D.he has trained the pigeons to follow them (B) Social anxiety disorder (社交焦虑症) prevents some 15 million Americans from leading normal social and romantic lives, a new survey finds. The disorder leaves many isolated, ashamed and often mis-diagnosed (误诊断). Thirty-six percent of those with social anxiety disorder have symptoms for 10 years or more before seeking help, the Anxiety Disorder Association of America reports. Social anxiety disorder is when somebody has a strong, persistent and unreasonable fear of social or performance situations. The condition causes people to avoid common, everyday situations and even other people for fear of being judged or criticized or losing face in front of others. Social anxiety disorder can have a negative impact on daily routines (例行公事) and job performance. It also makes it very difficult for people to develop friends and romantic partnerships. People with this disorder recognize their fear is excessive (过度的) and unreasonable, but they feel powerless to do anything about it.

Social anxiety disorder can start in the early teens. This is a disorder that starts affecting people early in their life. Many individuals report a history of anxiety dating back to earlier childhood. The disorder also has physical symptoms, including heart trouble, feeling that their throat will close up, sweating, faintness and trembling. Among people with the disorder, 75percent said the condition affected their ability to do normal activities. In addition, 69 percent said they didn’t want people to think they were crazy, and 58 percent said they were ashamed of their condition. However, when the condition is diagnosed and treated, many reported improvement in their lives. In fact, 59 percent who were receiving treatment said treatment had a positive effect on their ability to have a romantic relationship. In addition, 39 percent who had received treatment said knowing that treatment can be successful aided their decision to get help. 63. A person with social anxiety disorder is likely to ___________. A. suffer sudden loss of memory C. have rich imaginations B. avoid making public speeches D. stick to his own ideas

64. __________ of social anxiety disorder is (are) not mentioned in the passage. A. The definition C. The impact B. The symptoms D. The causes

65. People with social anxiety disorder think that their fear ____________. A. is beneficial to health C. is beyond their control B. is a normal part of life D. can be controlled if necessary

66. It can be seen from the last paragraph that treatment of the disorder ___________. A. can lead to improvement of life quality C. is not available to most sufferers B. has no positive effect at all D. is still at the experimental stage

67. Which of the following is TRUE about social anxiety disorder? A. B. C. D. Some sufferers would rather suffer than face their problem. The sufferers’ throats are closed up as a result of the disorder. Most sufferers can lead a normal life despite the disorder. The sufferers are in the habit of judging or criticizing others.

Section C 8%

Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words. Have you ever stood up for a pregnant (怀孕)woman? The reason why people don’t stand up for pregnant ladies on the bus isn’t that they are selfish. It’s because most people can’t seem to tell the difference between a pregnant belly and a big belly. Tokyo rail companies are providing pregnant women with badges (徽章). They hope other passengers on the Japanese capital’s crowded trains will readily offer their seats to them. The pregnant women are handing out the badges at stations. The pink and blue badges read, “ There is a baby in my belly ”. They will make it easier for pregnant women who are often left standing to go on train journeys. “Especially in the early stages it is difficult to tell from someone’s appearance whether they are pregnant,” said official at the Health Ministry, which came up with the idea. “But these early stages for the pregnant women are rather unstable and it is important to take care.” The move comes as Japan fights for ways to persuade women to have more babies. The low birth rate has left the nation with a falling population and the world’s highest proportion (比例) of elderly people. “We want to create an environment that is pleasant for pregnant women,” the official said. The move is welcomed by the majority of citizens. “When I was three months pregnant and got on the train, no one would really notice me and I couldn’t really ask them to give me a seat,” said Yoshiko Kato, a 38-year-old woman who is five months pregnant. “So these badges, I hope, will help some people to notice I am pregnant,” she said. (Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN EIGHT WORDS.) 68. To make other passengers offer their seat to pregnant women, rail companies _________________________________________. 69. The badges keep pregnant women from ________________________________________, which creates a pleasant environment for them. 70. Why is Japan trying to persuade women to have more babies? __________________________________________________________________________ 71. How do the citizens respond to this new move? __________________________________________________________________________
