Recently, a student organization at Cornell University introduced their Big Red Bikes program.

Like many bike share programs across America, the project aims to make biking __33__ and

Social anxiety disorder (社交焦虑症) prevents some 15 million Americans from leading

normal social and romantic lives, a new survey finds.

The disorder leaves many isolated, ashamed and often mis-diagnosed (误诊断). Thirty-six

percent of those with social anxiety disorder have symptoms for 10 years or more before seeking

help, the Anxiety Disorder Association of America reports.

Social anxiety disorder is when somebody has a strong, persistent and unreasonable fear of

social or performance situations. The condition causes people to avoid common, everyday

situations and even other people for fear of being judged or criticized or losing face in front of

others.

Social anxiety disorder can have a negative impact on daily routines (例行公事) and job

performance. It also makes it very difficult for people to develop friends and romantic

partnerships.

People with this disorder recognize their fear is excessive (过度的) and unreasonable, but

they feel powerless to do anything about it.

Social anxiety disorder can start in the early teens. This is a disorder that starts affecting

people early in their life. Many individuals report a history of anxiety dating back to earlier

childhood.

The disorder also has physical symptoms, including heart trouble, feeling that their throat

will close up, sweating, faintness and trembling.

Among people with the disorder, 75percent said the condition affected their ability to do

normal activities. In addition, 69 percent said they didn’t want people to think they were crazy,

and 58 percent said they were ashamed of their condition.

However, when the condition is diagnosed and treated, many reported improvement in their

lives. In fact, 59 percent who were receiving treatment said treatment had a positive effect on

their ability to have a romantic relationship. In addition, 39 percent who had received treatment

said knowing that treatment can be successful aided their decision to get help.

Tokyo rail companies are providing pregnant women with badges (徽章). They hope other passengers on the Japanese capital’s crowded trains will readily offer their seats to them.
The pregnant women are handing out the badges at stations. The pink and blue badges read, “There is a baby in my belly”. They will make it easier for pregnant women who are often left standing to go on train journeys.
“Especially in the early stages it is difficult to tell from someone’s appearance whether they are pregnant,” said official at the Health Ministry, which came up with the idea. “But these early stages for the pregnant women are rather unstable and it is important to take care.”
The move comes as Japan fights for ways to persuade women to have more babies. The low birth rate has left the nation with a falling population and the world’s highest proportion (比例) of elderly people. “We want to create an environment that is pleasant for pregnant women,” the official said.
