Izhar Gafni, 50, is an expert in designing automated mass-production lines. He is an amateur cycling enthusiast who for years considered an idea of making a bicycle from cardboard. After much trial and error(反复实验), his latest model has now proven itself and mass production will begin in a few months. “I was always fascinated by applying uncommon technologies to materials and I did this on several occasions. I worked for four years to get rid of the cardboard’s weak structural points, ”Gafni said. “Making a cardboard box is easy and it can be very strong and durable(耐用的), but to make a bicycle was extremely difficult and I had to find the right way to fold the cardboard in several different directions. It took a year and a half, with lots of testing and failure until I got it right, ”he said. Once the shape has been formed and cut, the cardboard is treated with a secret mixture made of organic materials to give it its waterproof(防水的)and fireproof qualities. In the final stage, it is coated with paint for appearance. In testing the durability of the treated cardboard, Gafni said he dipped a cross-section(横截面)in the water for several months and it kept all its hardened characteristics. Once ready for production, the bicycle will include no metal parts, even the brake mechanism and the wheel and pedal bearings will be made of recycled substances. Gafni owns several top-of-the-range bicycles which he said are worth thousands of dollars each, but when his own creation reaches mass production, it should cost no more than about $20 to buy. The costs of materials used are estimated at $9 per unit. 56. The bicycle mentioned in the passage . Twenty minutes after your appointed meeting time, they arrive with a list of excuses. Perhaps there was too much traffic or a meeting ran long. You’ve heard it a million times, yet their behavior never changes. Sound familiar? “I think everyone has a person in their life that does this, ”said Herb Reich. “Being late constantly, to me, means you are saying your time is more valuable than mine. ”Reich said while it’s easier to forgive friends and family for their lateness, we need to set very clear boundaries for being on time when it comes to professional relationships. “Sometimes I will list consequences in the contract, ”he said. “It’s always wise to let people know what you feel about their behavior. If they reject it, but at least you’re telling the truth and how you feel. ” So can people change their tardy(迟缓的)ways? “It’s my belief that all patterns can be changed if a person is conscious and wants it to be changed, ”Brand said. “You can learn how to focus attention on the desired state, ”she said. “We need to train our brain to have the desire to be on time. ” Brand said it’s typical to have growing pains in the beginning stages of rewiring your brain, but that it’s important not to get discouraged if things don’t get better immediately. “A person is much less likely to be motivated if there are no consequences, ”Brand said. “If there is no threat to losing a relationship, losing a job or getting kicked out of school, things will stay the same. So if(being late)bothers you, you have to really make the contract clear. ” Reich agrees. “Once, I was waiting for someone in my professional life, and after 15 minutes, I left, ”he said. “I explained why I did this, and that changed their behavior. My time is just as valuable as theirs and I don’t want to sit around. They weren’t late after that. ” 60. According to the passage the people who are constantly late .

City Farms in Edmonston, Maryland, is located near shopping centers, car repair shops and homes. The neighborhood is a working-class community. People do not h ave very much money, and they have limited access to fresh food in markets. Over the past two years, the farm has attracted volunteers from the community like Marcy Clark. She schools her four children at home. On a recent day she brought them to Eco City Farms for a lesson. Alston Clark thinks his experience very valuable. “I like coming out here, ”he says, “You know, you connect with the earth, where your food comes from. You appreciate the food a little bit more. ” Margaret Morgan-Hubbard started Eco City Farms. She thinks of it as a place where people can learn to live healthier lives. “Growing food in a community and showing that you can have farms even in the city is helpful to strengthen the relationship in that community and brings people together, ”she continues, “Every piece of what we do here is a demonstration to show people everything about how to have a sustainable community. ”she says. From the Eco City Farms people come to know that they are not only growing food and raising chickens and bees, but improving the soil with compost(堆肥)made from food waste. Sixteen wooden bins are filled with worms. Their job is to eat the food waste and help make it into compost. Eco City Farms is an experimental operation. The farm gets its power not from the local electricity networks but from the sun with solar panels. In winter, the greenhouses are heated using a geothermal(地热的)system. Vegetables can be grown all year. So once a week, all winter long, neighbors like Chris Moss and her three children bicycle to the farm to pick up a share of the

I was so excited because I hadn’t been out in over three months and just desired social interaction(交往). We were going to go for some pizza and then play some pool. But a day after inviting me—three days before the plans were going to happen—he told me that a few of his friends would be coming as well. The moment he said that I felt my stomach drop. My heart rate sped up and I began to slightly tremble as I pictured myself shaking hands with new people, trying to think of topics that would last more than 10 seconds, attempting to think of ways I could seem cool and interesting, and trying to figure out how I could hide my anxiety at the same time. I started doing mental gymnastics to find a way around meeting them—maybe my friend and I could meet up for a quick drink before his dinner plans. But then I realized it would be much harder to get out of it if I met up with him before, and I knew I’d give in. Finally, I made up a little white lie, and figured it would be much easier to tell him and give up the plans-I made it seem like I had plans I’d forgotten about, but that he and I could meet up soon. I stayed home, ordered a pizza, played on the computer, and watched some TV shows. It’s now been almost four months since I last went out-and that last time was with the same one friend. For many of us, meeting new people can be really scary. How many times have you been invited to an event—a party, dinner with a friend and their friends, lunch with a business partner, a weekend away with a friend or your partner and their family and friends—and turned it down for the comfort and safety of your own home? For the sincere social butterflies in the world, meeting new people can be exciting, while for those who struggle with social anxiety, the mere thought of meeting new people can cause significant anxiety and even panic symptoms. 68. At first the author had thought he would . A. go out for dinner with his only friend

Melatonin production is controlled by light exposure. Your brain should produce more in the evening, when it’s dark, to make you sleepy, and less during the day when it’s light and you want to stay awake. However, many aspects of modern life can disturb your body’s natural production of melatonin and your sleep-wake cycle. Spending long days in an office away from natural light, for example, can impact your daytime wakefulness and make your brain sleepy. Then bright lights at night can hold back your body’s production of melatonin and make it harder to sleep, however, there are ways for you to naturally regulate your sleep-wake cycle, improve your body’s production of melatonin, and keep your brain on a healthy schedule. Increase light exposure during the day ◆Remove your sunglasses in the morning and let light onto your face. ◆Let as much light into your home/workspace as possible. Keep curtains and blinds open during the day; move your desk closer to the window. ◆If necessary, use a light treatment box. A light treatment box can create sunshine and can be especially useful during short winter days when there’s limited daylight. Improve melatonin pr oduction at night ◆Turn off your television and computer. Many people use the television to fall asleep or relax at the end of the d ay. Not only does the light hold back melatonin production, but television can actually excite the mind, rather than relaxing it. Try listening to music or audio books, or practicing relaxation exercises. If your favorite TV show is on late at night, record it for viewing earlier in the day. ◆Don’t read from a backlit device at night(such as an iPad). If you use a portable electronic device to read, use an eReader that is not backlit, i. e. one that requires an additional light source such as a bedside lamp. ◆Change your light bulbs. Avoid bright lights before bed, use low-wattage bulbs instead.

In my childhood, my father went through hardships to support the whole family while my mother always worked without complaint and she would always try her best to protect me. She would get me up for school, feed me with nutrient food and assist my father in family chores. Years after, I grew tired of their suggestions and even behaved badly towards my parents, feeling an urge to get rid of the control and be independent. But with time going on, I noticed that they were bent w ith age. It was not until one day when I saw their white hair that I realized that my parents had been devoting all the energy to making sure of my healthy development. Now it is time for me to do what I can in return for their hard work. What I shall do now is study hard and make progress in my study. Only in this way, can I live up to their good wishes and take better care of my loving parents in the future.
