二、阅读理解 A Five years ago, David Smith wore an expensive suit to work every day. “I was a clothes addict,”he Jokes.“I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me so I could change if my clothes got wrinkled. ”Today David wears casual clothes-khaki pants and sports shirt-to the office. He hardly ever wears a necktie. “I’m working harder than ever. ” David says, “ and I need to feel comfortable.” More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work in the United States. The change from formal to casual office wear has been gradual. In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their employees to wear casual clothes on Friday (but only on Friday). This became known as“dress-down Friday”or “casual Friday”. “What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees has really become an everyday thing.”said business consultant Maisly Jones. Why have so many companies started allowing their employees to wear casual clothes? One reason is that it’s easier for a company to attract new employees if it has a casual dress code. “A lot of young people don’t want to dress up for work.” says the owner of a software company.“so it’s hard to hire people if you have a conservative dress code.”Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are wearing comfortable clothes. In a study conducted by Levi Strauss and Company, 85 percent of employers said that they believe that casual dress improves employee morale(士气). Only 4 percent of employers said that casual dress has a negative impact on productivity. Supporters of casual office wear also argue that a casual dress code helps them save money. “Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one every day,”one person said. “For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes.” 21、David Smith refers to himself a having been“a clothes addict” because A、he often wore khaki pants and a sports shire B、he couldn’t stand a clean appearance C、he wanted his clothes to look neat all the time D、he didn’t want to spend much money on clothes 22、David Smith wears casual clothes now, because A、they make him feel at ease when working B、he cannot afford to buy expensive clothes C、he looks handsome in casual clothes D、he no longer works for any company 23、According to this passage, which of the following statements is NOT true? A、Many employees don’t like a conservative dress code.
2

B、Comfortable clothes make employees more productive. C、A casual clothes code is welcomed by young employees. D、All the employers in the U.S. are for casual office wear. 24、According to this passage, which of the following statements is TRUE? A、Company workers started to dress down about twenty years ago. B、Dress-down has become an everyday phenomenon since the early 1990s. C、 “Dress-down Friday”was first given as a favor from employers. D、Many workers want to wear casual clothes to impress people. 25、 In this passage, the following advantages of casual office wear are mentioned in the passage EXCEPT A、 saving employees’ money B、 making employees more attractive C、improving employees’ motivation D、making employees happier B Subways are railways that are built underground. One of them is heavy rail. Subways are the best kind of high-speed city transport. The tracks and stations are below ground, beeping the streets above free of tracks and stations. The system is grade-separated, so the trains are not delayed by traffic problems. The trains operate at a relatively high speed, so people can move quickly between different parts of the city. Since travel by subway is much quicker than by car within the city, many people use the subway rather than drive. The subway is used in many cities around the world. The most famous subways include New York City, London, Paris, Tokyo, Boston, and Toronto. In Toronto, The Yonge Street line, once it is north of Downtown, forms onto the surface and runs as a surface railway, but the track is isolated from surface traffic with overpasses and underpasses, so it has the advantages of a grade separated line but at lower cost. The big problem with subways is that it costs too much to build them. In cities such as Calcutta, Mumbai and Manila, with lower labor costs, a subway can be built for much lower cost than in a richer nation with high labor costs. However, monorail(单轨铁路) may be good. Today, for richer nations, if a city does not have a high speed transport system and wants to begin a system, the best way may be monorail. Monorail has most of the advantages of subways but at a much lower cost. 26、Which of the following is NOT the advantages of the subways according to the passage? A、High speed and cheap B、Convenient for both countryside and cities. C、Running at lower cost D、Avoiding traffic problems in big cities. 27、The underlined word“isolated”in paragraph 3 means A、connected B、built C、destroyed D、separated

28、The greatest difficulty to build subways is A、finding proper places B、its public support C、its cost D、its safety 29、What would be the best title for the passage? A、Subways, Popular with Most Cities B、How to Build s Subway C、Something About Subways D、Subways and Monorails 30、Paragraph 2 mainly tells us . Very, Every year, her classmates voted her as the favorite student. She was easy to get along with. The number of friends she had by far outnumbered(超过) those of anyone else in her group. One day the 10-year-old was caught yakkety-yakking (哄堂大笑) in the class and ordered to stay back as punishment. Stating back meant helping in the garden or library after school. Now the school in which Mini studied had a rule of sorts. Once a month, you could interchange your punishment schedule with someone else, If you had something else to do the day you were punished, you could ask a friend to stand in for you. Of course, you had to return the favor, but in that same month itself. So the students who stayed back for others and wanted the favor repaid, found

ways to be punished that very month. As it happened, on that day a very dear aunt was visiting Mini on her way back to America, That afternoon was the only chance Mini had of seeing her for another five years. Mini needed someone to stand in for her. That was a problem because it was the last day of the month. So anyone who helped her, would do so out of friendship’s sake alone. She sought out Preeti and Mohit, but she was refused. By now, Mini was beginning to doubt if even one of her friends would agree to stay. But she tried again. Three more friends and each one refused. So, after school Mini stayed back to help the librarian, Ms Mathur. And, when Ms Mathur found her crying after everyone had left, it was she who surprised Mini by allowing her to leave to meet her aunt. “I may have many friends, but in reality I have none,” Mini murmured(咕 哝) to herself, as she went home. 36、According to the first paragraph, which of the following doesn’t agree with the text about Mini? 七选五 How do people analyze and solve worry problem? The answer is that we must equip ourselves to deal with different kinds of worries by learning the three basic steps of problem analysis, The three steps are: Get the facts. Why is it so important to get the facts? Unless you have the facts, you can’t possibly attempt to solve your problem intelligently. Without the facts, all you can do is wandering around in confusion. It’s not an easy job to get facts. When you are worried, your emotions are riding high. 41 When trying to get the facts, you can pretend that you are collecting this information not for yourself but for some other person. 42 You can also pretend that you are a lawyer preparing to agree. Try to get all the facts both on your side and the other side of the case. You will generally find the truth lies somewhere in between. 43 Whenever you are worried, write down the questions that make you worry. And write out all the various steps you could take and then the probable consequences of each step. For example, what am I worrying about? What cam I do about it? Here is what I am going to do about it. After carefully weighing all the facts, you can calmly come to a decision. Act on that decision. 44 How can you break the worry habit before it breaks you? Crowd worry out of your mind by keeping busy. Plenty of action is one of the best ways to cure worry. 45 If you know a situation is beyond your power, say to yourself: “It is so; it cannot be otherwise.” Don’t permit little things to ruin your happiness. Try to cultivate a mental attitude that will bring you peace and happiness. A、Accept what cannot be avoided. B、There comes a time when you must decide and never look back! C、But here are two ideas that can help you see the facts in a clear and objective way. D、Unless you take your action, all your fact-finding and analysis is a sheer waste of energy. E、Decide how much anxiety a thing may be worth. F、This will help you to take a cold and fair view of the evidence. G、Analyze the facts.
