However, she felt very lucky; no other girl had so many friends at school and in the neighborhood. But everything changed on National Friendship Day. On that day, everyone had to make three presents to give to their three best friends. Fiona enjoyed the task very much, thinking she would receive the most presents. However, when all the presents had been made and shared out among classmates, Fiona was the only one who had not received a present! She felt terrible, and spent hours crying. How could it be possible? So much effort to make so many friends, and in the end no one looked on her as their best friend? Everyone came and tried to comfort her for a while. But each one only stayed for a short time before leaving. This was exactly what Fiona had done so many times to others. When she got home, Fiona asked her mother where she could find true friends. "My dear, you're a lovely girl," said her mother, "but you can't be a close friend to everybody. There just isn't enough time to be available for everyone, so it's only possible to have a few true friends. The others will be playmates or acquaintances(泛泛之交), but not close friends. For a true friend you must always be available, especially when your friends are in bad times." Hearing this, Fiona decided to change her ways so that she could finally have some true friends. That night, in bed, she thought about her mother. Her mother was always glad to help her, she put up with(忍受) all of Fiona's dislikes and problems, and she loved her a great deal... That is what makes friends! Fiona smiled from ear to ear, realizing that she already had the best friend anyone could ever want. 61. Fiona like the task on National Friendship Day because ________. A. she enjoyed playing games B. she thought she would win the task C. she had so many friends to choose from D. she would give away lots of gifts to her friends

B Sly, a red fox, becomes bored while reading his newspaper in his house. So he walks to a farm to invite the pig, Hambone, to his underground house. But after a long walk, they both get hungry. Thus, they go into a chicken house to steal some food but get trapped (困住) there. Will they ever get back home alive? Sly and

Hambone have a big brave adventure while keeping each other safe. Teach your child the values of selflessness and teamwork through this book. Reduce, reuse, and recycle. How do you teach these important values to your children? One of the most effective ways, of course, is through an enjoyable story. Johnny Green and the Little Green Man not only entertains, but also gives important lessons on how we can do our part to help save our green earth. Children should be introduced to these values at an early age so that they will become a lifelong habit. Has your child told you about a new kid in their class? Did the kids try to make the new kid at school feel welcome? Gorble and the New Kid is a good tale of friendship and accepting each other’s differences. Gorble and the New Kid will teach your child that it is wrong to laugh at and make fun of other people. It also tells how important it is to accept each other’s differences. Making your biggest dream come true needs a lot of sacrifice (牺牲), even for children. In Molly’s Fields of Dreams, Molly, a young sheep, dreams of living in the grassy fields of gold and playing in the green grass. One day, she realizes that she must do something for it. So Molly leaves the family and wants to find those fields of gold. Will she be able to make her dream come true or will she be lost forever? Towards the end of Middle English, a sudden change in pronunciation started, with vowels(元 音) pronounced shorter and shorter. From the 16th century the British had contact(接触) with many peoples from around the world. This meant that many new words and phrases entered the language. The invention of printing also meant that there was now a common language in print. Books became cheaper and more people learned to read. Spelling and grammar became fixed, and the dialect of London became the standard. In 1604 the first English dictionary came out. Early Modern English and Late Modern English are mostly different in the number of words. Late Modern English has many more words, mainly because of the following two reasons: first, the Industrial Revolution(工业革命) led to the need for new words. Second, the British Empire covered one quarter of the earth's surface, and the English language took in foreign words from many countries. From around 1600, the English colonization(殖民地化) of North America led to American English. Some English pronunciations and words froze when they reached America. In some ways, American English is more like the English of Shakespeare than modern British English is. Some expressions that are called "Americanisms" are in fact from British expressions. They were kept in the colonies while lost for a time in Britain. Spanish also had an influence on American English, words like canyon, ranch, stampede and vigilante are from Spanish. French words and West African words (through the slave trade) also influenced American English. Today, American English has a greater influence, because of the USA’s movies, television, popular music, trade and technology.

69. The main difference between Early and Late Modern English lies in ________. A. vocabulary B. spelling C. grammar D. pronunciation 70. What helped to increase the vocabulary of Late Modern English? a. the invention of printing b. the Industrial Revolution c. the colonization d. the contact with other countries A. a, b, c B. a, c, d C. a, b, d D. b, c, d 71. What does the underlined word “froze” mean? A. remained unchanged. B. disappeared. C. improved. D. kept active. 72. The third paragraph mainly talks about ________. A. different kinds of English B. English colonies in North America C. other language’s influence on American English D. the difference between American English and British English D Simply put, language is what people and animals use to communicate their thoughts, ideas and feelings. Of course, animals communicate with each other differently from humans, and each type of animal communicates differently. For example, a bee uses a dance to tell the rest of the bees in

the hive ( 蜂 窝 ) where there is food, while whales communicate through the use of pleasant-sounding sounds. One could say then, that animals use different languages. Like animals, people also use different languages. Each culture has its own words and symbols that are used by people within that culture to communicate with others in the same culture. For example, a person living in Japan will use the Japanese language to communicate with other Japanese. Unlike animals though, some cultures use more than one language. People within these cultures are said to be either bilingual (双语的) or multilingual (多语的). One such place is Canada. It is very likely that a person living in Canada may speak both French and English. A person living in Switzerland may speak Italian, German and French. Not only do people use different languages to communicate, but languages also have different dialects. A dialect is a difference of a language which uses words and grammar somewhat differently from the standard form of the same language. For example, people who live in Manchester, England speak a dialect that is a little different from people who live in London, England; however, people in both cities speak English. There are also some people who don’t use a spoken language at all. These people use their hands to communicate. This type of language is called sign language and is most commonly used by people who are deaf. Now that we know how people communicate, we are faced with a question. Are we part of a certain culture because of the language we speak, or do we speak a particular language because we are part of that culture? To put it more simply, is a Chinese person Chinese because he speaks Chinese, or does he speak Chinese because he was born in China? What part does language play in the definition (定义) of culture? 73. The examples of bees and whales are used to show________. A. animal languages are simple to learn B. people can understand animal languages C. different animals use different languages D. animals communicate with each other 74. The main idea of the second paragraph is that ______. A. people communicate with those in the same culture B. there can be different languages in the same culture C. a culture can be expressed in several languages D. the symbol of a culture is the language spoken by its people 75. To judge whether a person speaks a dialect, you can depend on ______. A. what words and grammar he uses B. whether he uses sign language C. who he communicates with D. where his hometown is 76. What would be the best title for the passage? A. The culture of different countries B. The language in different cultures C. The development of language D. The definition of the language E Do you jump out of bed early, wide awake and ready to start your day?If so, you would be considered an “early bird”. Perhaps, though, you hate the sound of your alarm clock each morning and have little energy until afternoon. If so, you're probably a “night owl”. Most of us fall into one of these two groups, but what makes us this way?And is one better than the other? There are different opinions.

Traditionally, early risers have been praised as hard-working. On the other hand, those who prefer to sleep in and get up late are considered lazy. But even in the 21st century, most people still believe the early bird catches the worm. Yet some scientists now believe “night owls” can really focus(集中) longer and produce more than early risers. Research has found that the early bird does not always get the worm. In a Belgian study, both “morning people” and “evening people” were watched during their normal asleep and awake routines(常规).After 10 hours of being awake, the “evening people” became more alert(思维敏捷 的). However, the “morning people” became sleepy and less focused. Researchers believe the reason for this difference is that night owls receive a last-minute increase from their brains. This added energy allows them to stay alert for longer periods of time. Environment, lifestyle, activities and childhood routines all may have an effect on sleeping habits, yet genetics(遗传学)may play the biggest role. It is possible to change your sleeping habits through regular bedtimes, early exercise and by avoiding midnight snacks. But if you're happy rising early or staying up late, you're probably doing what works best for your own personal body clock. 77. The author introduces the subject by ________. A. telling an interesting story B. showing research results C. asking different questions D. describing two different lifestyles 78. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 really mean? A. He who gets up early achieves more. B. Early to bed, early to rise is good for health. C. “Night owls” can focus longer than “early birds”. D. “Night owls” are as hard-working as “early birds”. 79. What did the researchers find in a Belgian study? A. Late risers become sleepier than early risers. B. Early risers become as focused as later risers. C. Late risers can think quickly after being awake for 10 hours. D. Early risers can think clearly after being awake for 10 hours. 80. What opinion does the author finally agree on? A. Staying up late is OK. B. People should get up early. C. Whatever time suits you, that’s OK. D. It’s impossible to change one’s sleeping habit. 第Ⅱ卷(非选择题 共 20 分)
