weather stations. So meteorologists(气象学家)can see the weather of any part of the world. From the pictures, the scientists can often say how the weather will change. Today, nearly five hundred weather stations in sixty countries receive satellite pictures. When they receive new pictures, the meteorologists compare them with earlier ones. Perhaps they may find that the clouds have changed during the last few hours. This may mean that the weather on the ground may soon change, too. In their next weather forecast, the meteorologists can say this. So the weather satellites are a great help to the meteorologists. Before satellites were invented, the scientists could forecast the weather for about 24 or 48 hours. Now they can make good forecasts for three or five days. Soon, perhaps, they may be able to forecast the weather for a week or more ahead. 16. Satellites travel ____. A.in space B. above space C. above the ground D.in the atmosphere 17. The main idea of this passage is that satellites are now used in ____. Unfortunately, plenty of creepy-crawly critters (爬行生物) like to do the same thing! Winter is the time when bugs (虫子) invade your house without an invitation. The season can be tough for such creatures. In winter the air is cold, the ground is hard and many trees have no leaves. So bugs do what they have to do to survive. Monarch butterflies head south to warmer climates. Ants crowd in deep underground colonies and eat food they have been storing all year. Many insects go into a deep sleep called diapauses. There’re different kinds of diapauses, but all are similar to hibernation, a time when bigger animals become inactive in the cold. Insects go into an inactive period, too, but it often isn’t when the temperature drops. They rely on more dependable signals in the environment. For example, many insects can tell how much sunlight there’s each day. They use that to tell themselves when to shut down. Bugs are cold-blooded, meaning that their inside temperature is the same as the outside. They can’t move much when it gets below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. So they search for any warm place. They’re looking for protection. These guys have been doing this for 300 million years, so they don’t really know they’re coming into your house. The home is a recent event in terms of their evolutionary behavior. They enter through tiny cracks or come in unnoticed on your clothes or shoes. Remember that they may be invading your homes for warmth and food, but they don’t care about humans. 21. What is the purpose of the first paragraph? A. To point out that humans like to stay at home in winter. B. To tell readers that humans and bugs have the same living habits. C. To mean that bugs will invade humans’ houses for their winter. D. To put forward the idea that bugs are not welcome in winter. 22. The diapause of insects is____ . A. not the same as the animals’ hibernation. B. appearing in warm areas all the year. Sometimes, a discussion is used to make sure the students’ understanding. 6. Guided Practice. Students are often asked to solve some problems. 7. Independent Practice. This means homework. Eating breakfast at the start of the day, we have been told and told again, is as necessary as putting gasoline in the family car before starting a trip. But for many people, the thought of food as the first thing in the morning is never a pleasure. So in spite of all the efforts, they still take no breakfast. Between 1977 and 1983, the latest year for which figures could be obtained, the number of people who didn’t have breakfast increased by 33%---from 8.8 million to 11.7 million---according to the Chicago-based

DNA is the whole “map” of the human body. It is something that all humans have, and it tells the body what to do. DNA is the reason that we look like our parents, because we get some of their DNA to make our own. People have been trying to understand the human body for a long time. In 1860, Mr. Mendel discovered why we look the same as other people in our family. It is because of small things called “genes” in our body. In 1953, two scientists, Watson and Crick, found out that those small parts are really messages. They’re written in the DNA with a special language. In 1961, another two scientists found the first “word” that they could understand in that language. It shows how DNA tells the cell to build its parts. So far, scientists have found all the words in the DNA map, but we still do not understand what they all do. By understanding what just one “word ”means, we can help to save people from several illness. So the more we understand, the more doctors will be able to do. Most people hope that this will help to make better medicine and help sick people. Other people worry that when we learn more “words” and find out more information, we will use it in the wrong way. 16. Mr. Mendel discovered ____. A. DNA is a map of body B. the first word in DNA C. what DNA does D. genes in human body 17. Since 1961, scientists have ____. A. clarified the function of all the words in the DNA map. B. discovered medicines for longevity. C. found all the words about DNA. D. understood that genes are written in the DNA with a special language. 18. If we understand more “words” in the DNA map, we can make ____. A. better medicine B. more jobs for them C. maps for them D. them attractive 19. Which of the followings statements is NOT TRUE according to the passage? A. We look like our parents because of “genes” in our body. B. We have understood what all the words in the DNA maps do. C. DNA is the whole “map” of the human body. D. DNA tells the cell to build its parts. 20. People think generally this research about DNA is ____. A. ridiculous B. astonishing C. worthless D. beneficial Passage 2 Why do men die earlier than women? The latest research makes it known that the reason could be that men’s hearts go into rapid decline when they reach middle age. The largest study of the effects of ageing on the heart has found that women’s longevity may be linked to the fact that their hearts do not lose their pumping power with age. “We have found that the power of the male heart falls by 20-25 percent between 18 and 70 years of age,” said the head of the study, David Goldspink of Liverpool John Moores University in the UK. “Within the heart there are millions of cells that enable it to beat. Between the age of 20 and 70, one-third of those cells die and are not replaced in men,” said Goldspink. “This is part of the ageing process.” What surprises scientists is that the female heart sees very little loss of these cells. A healthy 70-year-old woman’s heart could perform almost as well as a 20-year-old one’s. “This gender difference might just explain why women live longer than men,” said Goldspink. They studied more than 250 healthy men and women between the ages of 18 and 80, focusing on healthy persons to remove the confusing influence of disease. “The team has yet to find why ageing takes a greater loss on the male heart,” said Goldspink. The good news is that men can improve the health of their heart with regular exercise. Goldspink stressed that women also need regular exercise to prevent their leg muscles becoming smaller and weaker as they age. 21. The underlined word “longevity” in the second paragraph probably refers to “____”. A. health B. long life C. aging D. effect
9 / 38

22. The text mainly talks about ____. A. men’s heart cells B. women’s aging process caused by heart cells C. the gender difference D. the effects of gender difference to heart aging 23. According to the text, the UK scientists have known that ____. A. women have more cells than men when they are born B. women can replace the cells that enable the heart to beat C. the female’s heart loses few of the cells with age D. women needn’t to do exercise to prevent aging problem 24. If a man wants to live longer, a man should ____. A. enable his heart to beat much faster B. find out the reason for ageing C. exercise regularly to keep his heart healthy D. prevent his cells from being lost 25. We can know from the passage that ____. A. the reason why ageing takes a greater loss on the male heart has been found out B. scientists are on the way to finding out why the female heart loses more of the cells C. the team had found out that the health of men’s heart can be improved D. women over 70 could lose more heart cells than those at the age of 20 Passage 3 Fear and its companion pain are two of the most useful things that men and animals possess, if they are properly used. If fire did not hurt when it burnt, children would play it until their hands were burnt away. Similarly, if pain existed but fear did not, a child would burn itself again and again, because fear would not warn the child to keep away from the fire that had burnt him or her before. A really fearless soldier-and some do exist-is not a good soldier because he is soon killed;and a dead soldier is of no use to his army. Fear and pain are therefore two guards without which men and animals might soon die out. In our first sentence we suggested that fear ought to be properly used. If, for example, you never go out of your house because of the danger of being knocked down and killed in the street by a car, you are letting fear rule you too much. Even in your house you are not absolutely safe: a plane may crash on your house, or ants may eat away some of the wood in your roof, and they later may fall on you, or you may get cancer! The important thing is not to let fear rule you, but instead to use fear as your servant and guide. Fear will warn you of dangers; then you have to decide what action to take. In many cases, you can take quick and successful action to avoid the danger. For example, you see a car coming straight towards you; fear warns you, you jump out of the way, and all is well. In some cases, however, you decide that there is nothing that you can do to avoid the danger. For example, you cannot prevent a plane from crashing into your house, and you may not want to go and live in a desert where there are no plants. In this case, fear has given you its warning; you have examined it and decided on your course of action, so fear of this particular danger is no longer of any use to you, and you have to try to overcome it. 26. Children would play with fire until their hands were burnt away if____. A. they were not well educated at school B. they had never played with fire before C. they had no sense of pain D. they were fearful of pain 27. Human beings will be extinct if ____. A. they have gained experience B. they are warned of the danger and take quick action C. they jump out of the way in time

14 / 38

chances to choose a good job while people with little or no education don’t. It seems that the purpose of education is to make people get jobs. But this isn’t accepted by all people. Some people may think that a person should spend the best years of his life to get education only for a way of living. This was probably one of the earliest reasons of education. In fact, if education is just a way of making a living, people don’t need to spend so much time in school. People can get education for a living in a short time. Subjects like history and geography need not be taught to everyone. Even language and mathematics need not be taught in detail(详细地), either. Here it is clear that education is much more than teaching a man to get a way of living. Education is well-rounded and it is mainly for improving a man. It is not only to teach him to speak, read and write, but also to develop his creative thinking and other abilities. After that, it is to make him a wise man and thankfully enjoy the achievements of human. Education is to make a man lead a better life. Educated people are expected to be able to listen to good music, read good books, watch plays and most of them take an interest in the world. I would agree that making a good living is an important reason for education, but certainly not the most important or the main reason. 16. People with little education usually . A. spend a long time in school B. have a good chance to get a job C. spend the best years to choose jobs D. have fewer chances to get a good job 17. The earliest education was probably to . A. make a man lead a better life B. teach a man to write and read C. make people get a way of living D. teach people to read good books 18. A. make a way of living B. feel an interest in the whole world C. develop their abilities in every aspect D. learn subjects like language and math 20. The passage mainly tells us that . A. education should make a man improve B. people can get education in a short time C. people should be able to get good paying jobs D. all subjects are so important for a way of living Passage 2 I promised Michael I wouldn’t mention this until the season was over. Now l think it's time. Early last season, I wrote a column about an art of kindness I had seen Jordan do to a disabled child outside the stadium. After it ran, I got a call from a man in the western suburbs. He said, “I read what you wrote about Jordan, but I thought I should tell you another thing I saw. ” Here it comes, I thought. It always does. Write something nice about a person, and people call you up to say that the person is not so nice. A few weeks later Jordan and I were talking about something else before a game, and I brought up what the man had said. Was the man right? Had Jordan really been talking to those two boys in that poor and dirty neighborhood? "Not two boys," Jordan said. "But four. " And he named them. He said four names. And what did they talk about? "Everything,” Jordan said. “I’ve asked to see their grades so that I can check to see if they're paying attention to their study. If it turns out that one or two of them may need teaching, I make sure they get it. " It's just one more part of Michael Jordan's life, one more thing that no one knows about, and one more thing Jordan does fight for. The NBA season is over now, and those boys have their memories. So do I! When the expert reviewers begin to turn against Jordan as they surely will, I'll think about those boys under the streetlight, waiting for the man they know to come. For someone they can depend on. 21. The writer wrote this story about Jordan and his young friends because . A. he thought highly of Jordan's deeds B. he hated to see Jordan do something bad C. he believed it was time to help the disabled D. he felt sure he needn't keep the promise then 22. A man in the western suburbs made a call to .
15 / 38

A. know why Jordan stopped in a bad area B. get a chance to become famous himself C. let the writer know Jordan was not that nice D. offer an example to show how Jordan helped others 23. Jordan talked with the boys because he . A. needed their support B. had promised to do so C. liked to teach them to play basketball D. liked to help people 24. The writer of the passage might be . A. an excellent basketball player B. good at dealing with problems of life C. always ready to make friends with young people D. willing to do whatever he can for the good of society Passage 3 You wake up in the morning, the day is beautiful and the plans for the day are what you have been looking forward to for a long time. Then the telephone rings, you say hello, and the drama starts. The person on the other end has a depressing tone in his voice as he starts to tell you how terrible his morning is and that there is nothing to look forward to. You are still in a wonderful mood? Impossible! Communicating with negative people can wash out your happiness. It may not change what you think, but communicating long enough with them will make you feel depressed for a moment or a long time. Life brings ups and downs, but some people are stuck in the wrong idea that life has no happiness to offer. They only feel glad when they make others feel bad. No wonder they can hardly win others' pity or respect. When you communicate with positive people, your spirit stays happy and therefore more positive things are attracted. When the dagger(匕首)of a negative person is put in you, you feel the heavy feeling that all in all, brings you down. Sometimes we have no choice but to communicate with negative people. This could be a co-worker, or a relative. In this case, say what needs to be said as little as possible. Sometimes it feels good to let out your anger back to the negative person, but all this does is to lower you to that same negative level and they won't feel ashamed of themselves about that. Negativity often affects happiness without even being realized. The negative words of another at the start of the day can cling to(附着) you throughout the rest of your day, which makes you feel bad and steals your happiness. Life is too short to feel negative. Stay positive and avoid negativity as much as possible. 26. The purpose of the first paragraph is to . A. make a comparison B. offer an evidence C. introduce a topic D. describe a daily scene 27. How can negative people have effect on us? A. By influencing our emotion. B. By telling us the nature of life. C. By changing our ways of thinking. D. By comparing their attitudes to life with ours. 28. Some negative people base their happiness on . A. other people's pity for them B. making other people unhappy C. building up a positive attitude D. other people's respect for them 29. According to the passage, to reduce negative people’s influence on us, we are advised to . A. change negative people's attitudes to life B. show our dissatisfaction to negative people C. make negative people feel ashamed of themselves D. communicate with negative people as little as possible 30. What is the author's attitude towards negative people? A. Favorable. B. Critical. C. Indifferent. D. Supportive. Passage 4 Violin prodigies (神童), I learned, have come in distinct waves from distinct regions. Most of the great performers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries were born and brought up in Russia and Eastern Europe. I asked Isaac Stern, one of the world's greatest violinists, the reason for this phenomenon. “It is very clear," he told me. "They were all Jews ( 犹太人) and Jews at the time were severely oppressed and ill-treated in that part of the world. They were not allowed into the
16 / 38

professional fields, but they were allowed to achieve excellence on a concert stage." As a result, every Jewish parent's dream was to have a child in the music school because it was a passport to the West. Another element in the emergence of prodigies, I found, is a society that values excellence in a certain field and is able to nurture (培育) talent. Nowadays, the most nurturing societies seem to be in the Far East. "In Japan, a most competitive society with stronger discipline than ours, “says Isaac Stern, “children are ready to test their limits every day in many fields, including music. When Western music came to Japan after World War II, that music not only became part of their daily lives, but it became a discipline as well. " The Koreans and Chinese, as we know, are just as highly motivated as the Japanese. That's a good thing, because even prodigies must work hard. Next to hard work, biological inheritance(遗传)plays an important role in the making of a prodigy. J. S. Bach, for example, was the top of several generations of musicians, and four of his sons had significant careers in music. 31. Jewish parents in Eastern Europe longed for their children to attend music school because . A. it would allow them access to a better life in the West B. Jewish children are born with excellent musical talent C. they wanted their children to enter into the professional fields D. it would enable the family to get better treatment in their own country 32. Nurturing societies as mentioned in the passage refer to societies that . A. are highly motivated in the education of music B. treasure talent and provide opportunities for its full development C. encourage people to compete with each other D. promise talented children high positions 33. Which of the following contributes to the emergence of musical prodigies according to the passage? . A. A natural gift. B. Extensive knowledge of musicC. Very early training. D. A prejudice-free society. 34. The success of J. S. Bach and his sons show that . A. most musical prodigies are Jews B. people in the Far East are more sensitive in music C. genic factors play an important role in making prodigies D. a great musician must grow up in a family of musicians. 35. The eagle has the longest life of its group. It can reach up t0 70 years. But to reach this age, the eagle must make a hard and painful decision. When an eagle reaches near 40, its short sharp beak becomes bent. Its long and once flexible(灵活的)talons can no longer catch animals or birds for food. And its old and heavy wings with thick feathers on its body make it difficult to fly. Then, the eagle has only two choices: to die or to go through a painful time of change which needs five months. When the eagle feels weak and is about to die, it goes to a place far away on the top of a mountain and sits on a nest. For a new life, the eagle knocks its beak against a rock until it pulls its beak out. After pulling it out, the eagle waits for a new beak to grow. And then it pulls out its talons and old feathers. It takes the eagle five months to complete its change and get a new life. We can call it its rebirth. So it can live for 30 more years. Like the eagle, we human beings sometimes need to make some change to get out of our difficulty. In miserable condition, we have to change our ways of life. The changing may be very painful. But sometimes we have to throw off our old habits, memories and traditions. We can’t go on with all our past burdens. 16. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. When an eagle reaches near 40, its short sharp beak is still straight B. For a new life, the eagle knocks its talons against a rock. C. If the eagle doesn’t change itself, it will have a new life. D. The writer ’s idea is that we can’t go on with all our past burdens. 17. The underlined word “miserable” here probably means “ ____ ”. A. terrible C. lonely 18.The best title for the passage can be “ ____ ”. A. The death of the eagle C. A good and easy decision 19.What’s the main idea of this passage? A. The living period of the eagle is very short. C. The eagle’s decision is good and easy. 20. A ____ lifespan is not common for an eagle. A. 40-year C. 30-year B. 70-year D. l00-year Passage 2 When I was nine years old, I loved to go fishing with my dad. But the only thing that wasn't very fun about it was that he could catch many fish while I couldn't catch anything. I usually got pretty upset and kept asking him why. He always answered, "Son, if you want to catch a fish, you have to think like a fish." I remember being even more upset then because, "I'm not a fish!" I didn't know how to think like a fish. Besides, I reasoned, how could what I think influence what a fish does? As I got a little older I began to understand what my dad really meant. So, I read some books on fish. And I even joined the local fishing club and started attending the monthly meetings. I learned that a fish is a cold-blooded animal and therefore is very sensitive to water temperature. That is why fish prefer shallow water to deep water because the former is warmer. Besides, water is usually warmer in direct sunlight than in the shade. Yet, fish don't have any eyelids(眼皮)and the sun hurts their eyes ...The more I understood fish, the more I became effective at finding and catching them. When I grew up and entered the business world, I remember hearing my first boss say, “We all need to think like salespeople.” But it didn't completely make sense. My dad never once said, “If you want to catch a fish you need to think like a fisherman.” What he said was, “You need to think like a fish.” Years later, with great efforts to promote long-term services to people much older and richer than me, I gradually learned what we all need is to think more like customers. It is not an easy job. I will show you how in the following chapters. 21. Why was the author upset in the fishing trips when he was nine?

When can students enjoy a party in residences Passage 4 Although I had stayed in England for over a year, it was difficult for me to understand the British mind. Travelling to the office every day by train, I watched people hiding their faces behind newspapers. They rarely talked to each other, occasionally lifting their eyebrows to look at their fellow passengers. But when I started a conversation by using the excuse of the weather, I found I may had a natural gift for gossip. They would go on telling me all about themselves and their families. Sometimes I was even given their telephone numbers and asked to look them up. At first I took their invitations as they appeared. When I rang and heard the surprised tone “Who” I felt embarrassed and pretended I had got the wrong number. I had to learn to say “please”, “sorry”, “thank you”, whether I felt it or not. Once while buying a ticket to Waterloo, I forgot to say “please”. The man at the counter was offended and would not give me the ticket until I had said “please”. When he handed me the ticket, he said, “thank you”. As I was getting into the train, an English woman pushed me with her shoulders, and said “sorry”, and hurried inside to take the only empty seat. On the way to the office one morning, a man collapsed in my compartment. At Waterloo, everybody left, but I stayed with him until the ambulance arrived and was an hour late getting to the office. I was told that it was not my job to look after strangers. I found that many did not even look after their own parent who were old and helpless. In India, it is the duty of the children to look after their parents and old relatives. While serving a meal, my mother always gave food to the elderly relatives and children first and ate whatever was left over. The elderly never felt isolated. They lived with their families and contributed to the happiness of the house. 31. What do you think the writer is mainly talking about? A. His good experiences in England. B. A. Many British people were born speakers. B. Many British people were talkative C. Many British people were hot-tempered. D. Many British people were talented. 35. Passage 1 How can you remember a song from your childhood to this day? Why do your teachers use songs to teach you English? It seems there is a scientific reason for this. Researchers are now studying the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. They find that remembering words in a song is the best way to remember even the most difficult language. “Singing could be a new way of learning a foreign language. The brain likes to remember things when they are used in a catchy and meaningful way”, said Dr, Karen Ludke. The findings may help those who have difficulties learning foreign languages. On his blog, Dr. Ludke writes, “A listen-and-repeat singing method can support foreign language learning, and opens the door for future research in this area.” Many language teachers know the value of using music and singing. Hua Zhuying, a teacher at a Chinese language school in Washington, D.C. depends heavily on songs in teaching Chinese. She says, “I use music all the time to teach children Chinese. For little kids usually we use the music. Not only does it work, but it is fun for kids.” “Sometimes, I think if I were taught English that way, maybe I could speak much better English than now,” Hua Zhuying adds. Our brain likes music, especially for remembering. So, if you’re still struggling in learning a language, why not try singing it out ? 16. By print media, we mean books, newspapers and magazines. Electronic media include television, computer, radio and movie. Mass media allow us to record and pass information rapidly to a large, scattered audience. They extend our ability to talk to each other by helping us overcome barriers caused by time and space. There are various ways in which mass media make daily life easier for us. Firstly, they inform and help us keep a watch on our world. They gather and pass on information we would be unlikely or unable to obtain on their own. Secondly, mass media help us to arrange our time and life. What we talk about and what we think about are greatly influenced by the media. When people get together, they tend to talk about certain happenings in newspapers or on TV. Because we are exposed to different points of view through different kinds of media every day, we are able to evaluate all

sides of a certain issue. Thirdly, the media are used to persuade people. A good example is advertisements through the media. Newspapers, magazines and TV are filled with all kinds of colorful, persuasive advertisements. Though many advertisements may not say openly that they want you to buy a certain product, they describe their products in such a way that you may want to buy them. Fourthly, the media also entertain. All of the media make efforts to try to entertain their audience. For instance, even though the newspaper is a prime medium of information, it also contains entertainment features. Television, motion pictures, fiction books and some radio stations and magazines are devoted mainly to entertainment. It is very difficult for a nation to give help directly to people in another nation. The United Nations Organization (UNO) could undertake to direct the distribution of aid. Here however rises the problem of costs. Also tied with this is time. Perhaps the UNO could set up a body of devoted men and women in every country who can speedily distribute aid to victims of floods and earthquakes. More than the help that one nation can give to another during a disaster; it would be more effective to give other forms of help during normal times. A common proverb says, “Give me a fish and I eat for day, teach me to fish and I eat for a lifetime.” If we follow this wise saying, it would be right to teach people from less developed nations to take care of themselves. For example, a country could share its technology with another. This could be in simple areas like agriculture or in more complex areas like medical and health care or even in building satellites. Even small country is able to help less developed nations. Sometimes what is take for granted, like the setting up of a water purification plant or the administration of a school, could be useful for countries which are looking about to solve common problems. It does not cost much to share such simple things. Exchange students could be attached for a number of months or years and learn the required craft while on the site. They can then take their knowledge back to their homelands and if necessary come back from time to time to clear doubts or to update themselves. Such aid will be truly helpful and there is no chance of it being temporary or of it falling into the wrong hands. Many countries run extensive courses in all sorts of skills. It will not cost much to include deserving foreigners in these courses. Besides giving effective help to the countries concerned, there is also the build-up of friendships to consider. Giving direct help by giving materials may be effective in the short run and must continue to be given in the event of
29 / 38

emergencies. However, in the long run what is really effective would be the sharing of knowledge. 26. According to the author, how could international aid reach the victims in time? A. By solving the cost problems B. By solving the transportation problems C. By relying on the direct distribution of the UNO. D. By setting up a body of devoted people in every country. 27. What does the author try to express in the underlined sentence? A. Providing food is vital . Learning to fish is helpful C. Teaching skills is essential D. Looking after others is important. 28. The second paragraph is developed mainly ____. A.by contrast B.by process C.by comparison D.by example 29. Which aid is likely to fall into the wrong hands? A. A medical team. B. An exchange program. C. Financial support. D. A water plant. 30. What can we infer about international aid from the passage? A. It is facing difficulties B. It is unnecessary during normal times C. It should be given in the form of materials D. It has gained support from developed countries Passage 4 Human needs seem endless. When a hungry man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat; when a manager gets a new sports car, a big house and pleasure boats dance into view. The many needs of mankind might be made up of several levels. When there is money enough to satisfy one level of needs, another level appears. The first and most basic level of needs involves food. Once this level is satisfied, the second level of needs, clothing and some sort of shelter, appears. By the end of World WarⅡ, these needs were satisfied for a great majority of Americans. Then a third level appeared. It included such items as automobiles and new houses. By 1957 or 1958 this third level of needs was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s, a fourth level of needs appeared: the “life-enriching” level. While the other levels involve physical satisfaction, that is, the feed in comfort, safety, and transportation, this level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement, and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called “luxury” items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical and dental care, and recreation. Also included here are fancy goods and the latest fashions. On the fourth level, a lot of money is spent on services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of needs as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level? A fifth level would probably involve needs that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime, and prejudice. After filling our stomachs, our clothes closets, our garages, our teeth and our minds, we now may seek to ensure the health, safety, and leisure to enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels. 31. According to the passage, man will begin to think about such needs as housing and clothing only when _____. A. he has saved up enough money B. he has grown dissatisfied with his simple shelter C. he has satisfied his hunger D. he has learned to build houses 32. It can be inferred from the passage that by the end of World War Ⅱ, most Americans _____. A. were very rich B. lived in poverty

The campaign has gained much support all over the country and has raised awareness among all people of energy saving and environmental protection. It's a real success. I whole-heartedly support this campaign. With the development of the society and economy, more and more families afford to buy their own cars, which has led to a rapid increase in automobile saturation. It’s also the main cause of heavy traffic jams and serious air pollution. To some extent, Car-free Day is an effective publicity movement that could arouse the awareness and interest of people to live a low-carbon life. With a car, we can have much convenience in life; without a car, we can still have a harmonious life. Therefore, it's beneficial to launch such a campaign and more cities and residents will take part in this activity.

When haze came, the whole city was covered with thick yellow fog and suspended particles which could be breathed into our body, causing serious healthy problems. Part of the cause was the dry weather, but the severely damaged environment and over emitted automobile exhaust gas contributed a lot to this nightmare. Thus, we should take effective measures to rebuild our environment. In my opinion, laws and regulations should be enforced by the government and authorities to control the emission of polluting gas, reduce the unnecessary construction projects and plant more grass and trees. To ourselves, we should enhance the awareness of environmental protection and choose a green lifestyle. With our effort, the haze will be controlled effectively in the near future.

Film or book, which do you prefer? Some of us think that it is better to see the film than to read the book in the original. The reason is that it takes less time to understand the whole story. Besides, the film is usually more interesting, and it is easier to follow. Some others have just the opposite opinion. They think that they can get more detailed information from the original. Meanwhile, the language in the book is possibly more lively and beautiful. Personally, I agree with the second view. Actually I have more reasons for it. I think I can stay at home, reading quietly in a situation of my own, and what's more, I am able to better understand the author's ideas. In a word, to read the original work is better than to see the film based on it.
