He sent his camera crew(摄制组)out one evening to film the sunset for him . The next morning he said to the men, “Have you provided me with that sunset?” “No, sir.” the men answered.

The director was angry. “Why not?” he asked. “Well, sir,” one of the men answered. “we?re on the east coast here, and the sun sets in the west. We can get you a sunrise over the sea if necessary, but not a sunset.” “But I want a sunset!” the director shouted. “Go to the airport, take the next flight to the west coast, and get one.” But then a young secretary had an idea. “Why don?t you photograph a sunrise,” she suggested, “and then play it backwards? Then it?ll look like a sunset.” The camera crew went out early the next morning and filmed a bright sunrise over the beach in the middle of a beautiful bay(海湾). Then at nine o?clock they took it to the director. “Here it is, sir!” they said, and gave it to him. He was very pleased. They all went into the studio. “All right,” the director explained. “now our hero and heroine are going to say good-bye. Run the film backwards so that we can see the ?sunset behind them.?” The “sunset” began, but after a quarter of a minute, the director suddenly put his face in his hands and shouted to the camera crew to stop. C. as the sunrise did not look as beautiful as he had imagined D. because he was disappointed with the performance of the hero and heroine B I used to dream about Pisa when I was a boy. I read about the famous building called the Leaning Tower of Pisa. But when I read the word Pisa, I was thinking of pizza. I thought this tower was a place to buy pizza. It must be the best pizza in the world, I thought. Many years later I finally saw the Leaning Tower. I knew then that it was Pisa and not pizza. But there was still something

special about it for me. The tower got its name because it really does lean to one side. Some people want to try to fix it. They are afraid it may fall over and they do not like the way it looks. I do not think it's a good idea to try to fix it. The tower probably will not fall down. It is 600 years old. Why should anything happen now? And, if you ask me, I like the way it looks. I like the way it leans over the city. To me it is a very human kind of leaning. Nothing is perfect, it seems to say. And who cares? Why do people want things to be perfect? Imperfect things may be more interesting. Let's take the tower in Pisa. Why is it so famous? There are many other older, more beautiful towers in Italy. But Pisa tower is the most famous. People come from all over the world to see it. 51. This passage is about ____. A. Italian pizza B. Italy's problems C. how the Leaning Tower of Pisa got its name D. why the author likes Pisa 52. The writer _________. A. doesn't like the way the tower looks B. likes the way the tower looks C. thinks it's the most beautiful tower in Italy D. doesn't like towers 53. The writer likes the Leaning Tower of Pisa because ______. A. it's old B. it's perfect C. it sells pizza D. it's imperfect C Some "doctors" use magic; others use needles and others use pills. Who are they? Among the Indians of North America the medicine man was a very important person. He could cure illnesses, and he could speak to the spirits(神灵)-the supernatural forces that controlled the world. The Indians believed that bad spirits made people ill. So, when people were ill, the medicine man tried to help them by using magic; he spoke to the good spirits and asked for their help. Many people were cured because they thought that the spirits were helping them. But really these people cured themselves. Sometimes your own mind is the best doctor for you. The medicine men were often successful for another reason, too. They knew about plants that really can cure illnesses. A lot of modern medicines are made from plants that were used by medicine men hundreds of years ago. For more than five thousand years Chinese doctors have used needles to fight illness. This kind of medicine is called acupuncture(针灸). The doctor studies the sick person carefully. Then he puts needles into that person's body at the right places for his illness. Chinese doctors believe that they can control the body's natural forces in this way. At first, doctors in the West thought that this was just another kind of magic. Recently, however, they have found out that it is possible to cure many illnesses like this because the needles help the body to produce its own medicines. In this way the body cures itself. 54. If one is ill, it is important for him to ______. A. believe in god B. worry about his illness C. use magic D. be light hearted 55. According to this passage modern medicines have nothing to do with ______. A. the old traditional medicines B. the supernatural forces C. plants D. the Indians 56. Acupuncture, in fact, is _______. A. the only way to cure many dangerous illnesses B. used to cure all kinds of illnesses C. effective to many illnesses D. popular among the Western people

D A hobby can be almost anything a person likes to do in his spare time. Hobbyists raise pets, build model ships, weave baskets, watch birds, hunt animals, climb mountains, raise flowers, fish, ski, skate, and swim. Hobbyists also paint pictures, attend concerts and plays, and perform on musical instruments. They collect everything from books to butterflies(蝴蝶), and from shells to stamps. People take up hobbies because these activities offer enjoyment, friendship, knowledge, and relaxation(放松). Sometimes they even yield financial profit(bring in money). Hobbies help people relax after periods of hard work, and provide a balance between work and play. Hobbies also offer interesting activities for persons who have retired. Anyone, rich or poor, old or young, sick or well, can follow a satisfying hobby, regardless of(不管)his age, position, or income. Hobbies can help a person's mental and physical health. Doctors have found that hobbies are valuable in helping patients recover from physical or mental illness. Hobbies give bedridden(久病 的) or wheel-chair patients something to do, and provide interests that keep them from thinking about themselves. Many hospitals treat patients by having them take up interesting hobbies or pass times. In early times, most people were too busy making a living to have many hobbies. But some persons who had leisure(free time) did enjoy hobbies. The ancient Egyptians played games with balls made of wood or pottery(陶器). People today have more time than ever before for hobbies. Machines have reduced the amount of time they must spend on their jobs. Hobbies provide variety for workers who do the same monotonous(单调的)tasks all day long. More people are retiring than ever before, and at an earlier age. Those who have developed hobbies never need to worry about what to do with their newly-found leisure hours. Sir William Osler, a famous Canadian doctor, expressed the value of hobbies by saying, "No man is really happy or safe without a hobby." 57. Which of the following is right? A. Hobby is one's regular activity in his office B. Hobby is not one's regular activity in his spare time. C. Hobby is a kind of activity only for old people. D. Hobby is a kind of activity only for young people. 58. It seems that people who ______ may spend more time enjoying their hobbies. A. have little money B. have much money C. have retired from work D. have left school 59. The phrase "recover from" in the third paragraph means _______. A. get back B. become healthy again C. become calm D. supply with a new cover 60. In early times, most people spent less time on their hobbies, because _____. A. they were brave and hard-working B. the living conditions were poor C. they were engaged in making a living D. B and C 61. What's the writer's opinion about hobbies? A. Hobbies are activities that offer enjoyment, friendship, knowledge and relaxation. B. A hobby can be almost anything a person likes to do in his spare time. C. Hobbies are popular among people in Egypt. D. People should have hobbies in their spare time E PALO ALTO, California-"Turning off the television may help prevent children from getting fatter-even if they do not change their diet or increase the amount they exercise," US researchers

said last week. A study of 192 third and fourth graders, generally aged eight and nine, found that children who cut the number of hours spent watching television gained nearly two pounds less over a one-year period than those who did not change their television diet. "The findings are important because they show that weight loss can only be the result of a reduction in television viewing(watching) and not any other activity," said Thomas Robinson, a pediatrician (儿科专家) at Stanford University. "American children spend an average of more than four hours per day watching television and videos or playing video games, and rates of childhood being very fat have doubled over the past 20 years," Robinson said. In the study, reported this week to the Pediatric Academic Societies' annual meeting in San Francisco, the researchers persuaded about 100 of the students to reduce their television viewing by one quarter to one third. Children watching fewer hours of television showed a significantly smaller increase in waist size and had less body fat than other students who continued their normal television viewing, even though neither group ate a special diet or took part in any extra exercise. "One explanation for the weight loss could be the children unstuck to the television may simply have been moving around more and burning off calories (热量)," Robinson said. "Another reason might be due to eating fewer meals in front of the television. Some studies have suggested that eating in front of the TV encourages people to eat more," Robinson said. 62. The author tries to tell us in the first two paragraphs that ______. A. children will get fatter if they eat too much B. children will get thinner if they eat less C. children will get fatter if they spend less time watching TV D. children will get fatter if they spend more time watching TV 63. According to the passage, the time American children usually spend on watching TV _____. A. is more than four hours a day B. is less than four hours a day C. doubled in the last twenty years D. is more than on any other activities 64. The time children spend on TV viewing every day is suggested to be about ______. A. six hours B. eight hours C. three hours D. one hour 65. Which one of the following is right? A. Children usually eat fewer while watching TV. B. Children usually eat more while watching TV. C. Children eat the same amount of meals while watching TV. D.
