They try to sell us their products by using beautiful art , videos, images or slogans that are catchy. The most famous companies have highly popular logos that can be recognized by almost everybody. For those of you who have seen the movie Finding Forrester, there is that scene where Jamal walks up to some guy with a BMW and asks him what the car logo means. The man did not know the answer and since that day , whenever I see a famous company logo I try to find the meaning of it. Many think the horse on the Ferrari logo represents the horsepower of the cars they manufacture. The story behind it is far more interesting. During World War I, a pilot, Count Francesco Barraca, painted the horse on his airplane to bring him luck. He had it on his plane because it was the logo of his squadron Barraea's mother then convinced Enzo Ferrari to put the logo on his racing cars in the early 1930's to bring good luck to the drivers. The logo then stayed the same ever since. The yellow on the background represents the birthplace of Enzo Ferrari. Starbucks started in 1971, in Seattle. The mermaid (美人鱼) represented on the logo is now known by any coffee drinker. It is a mythological sea creature with the look of a female, the only difference being that they have a tail of a fish. The reason why Starbucks incorporated one in their company logo is that it was believed mermaids used to sing to sailors in order to make them walk away from their ship or to ground their ships. In the 1500s, spices, tea and coffee were popular merchandise to trade. So the mermaid in the logo of Starbucks is the one that "brings" coffee and tea to the

stores. 56. The writer became interested in logos of some famous brands after . A. he watched an attractive movie B. he saw a scene in a movie C. he walked up to some guy with a BMW D. he noticed some famous logos 57. Many companies use logos because . A. people enjoy beautiful logos B. people are more likely to buy their products C. people can recognize the products more easily D. people are interested in the meanings of the logos 58. From the second paragraph, we can conclude that . A. Barraca once served in the navy B. Barraca took part in car racing C. Enzo Ferrari founded a car company D. Enzo Ferrari liked horses very much 59. Which of the following is TRUE according to Paragraph 3 ? A. Starbucks was once a company trading spices, tea and coffee. B. Hearing mermaids sing, sailors would know the right direction. C. Starbucks has a history of more than five hundred years. D. The logo of Starbucks is believed to make the business better. 60. The underlined word in the third paragraph probably means . A. included B. abandoned C. corrected D. designed B "Peter, I'd like you to stay for a minute after class." Calvin teaches my favorite body conditioning class at the gym. "What did I do?" I asked him. "It's what you didn't do." "What didn't I do.'?" "Fail." "You kept me after class for not failing?" "This," he began to imitate my casual weightlifting style, using weights that were obviously too light, "is not going to get you anywhere. A muscle only grows if you work it till it fails. You need to use more challenging weights. You need to fail." Yet most of us spend a great effort trying to avoid even the possibility of failure. Dr. Carol Dweck, professor at Stanford University, has done a large amount of research to understand what makes someone give up in the face of hardship rather than struggle to overcome it. It turns out the answer is deceptively simple. It's all in your head. If you believe that your talents are inborn or fixed, then you will try to avoid failure at all costs because failure is proof of your limitations. But if you believe your talents grow with persistence and effort, then you see failure as an opportunity to improve. Michael Jordan, arguably the world's best basketball player, has a growth mindset. In high school he was cut from the basketball team but that obviously didn't discourage

him: "I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed." Want to increase your own performance? Set high goals where you have a 50% ~ 70% chance of success. According to Psychologist David McClelland, that's the sweet spot for high achievers. Then, when you fail half the time, figure out what you should do differently and try again. That's practice. The next class I did with Calvin, I doubled the weight I was using. Yeah, that's right. Unfortunately, that gave me tendonitis in my elbow, which I'm nursing with rest and ice. Sometimes you can even fail when you're trying to fail. Hey, I'm learning. 61. In Calvin's eyes, what is the best way to gain muscles? A. Doing more weightlifting exercises. B. Using more challenging weights. C. Practicing more after class. D. Avoiding casual attitudes. 62. How does the writer prove his opinion to us'?. A. By using his teacher's experience. B. A. they are afraid of revealing their limitations B. they have tried too many times C. they have talent limitations D. they don't have a chance to try 64. What is the purpose of the example of Michael Jordan? A. To tell us we can use failures to improve. B. To show hard work is the only way to success. C. To prove talent is less important compared with efforts. D. To show setting suitable goals is the key. 65. What goal is perfect for one who wants to make higher achievements? A. The higher the goal, the better. B. A goal with a small chance of success. C. A goal as high as other successful people's. D. A goal with a little more than half chance of success. C Former National Football League player and children's author Tim Green has added another book to his list of accomplishments: Unstoppable. The book tells the story of a 12-year-old boy named Harrison, who survives life in a cruel foster home before he finally finds a loving family. Once he settles in and realizes his natural football ability, tragedy strikes again and he loses his leg to a deadly bone cancer. Unstoppable follows Harrison's incredible journey as he faces many challenges in his life. Tim Green says he decided to write a novel about a kid facing cancer after watching

how his wife fought to survive her own illness. "Her mental and physical toughness were more heroic to me than anything I'd ever seen in the national sports leagues," Green told TFK Kid Reporter Zachary J. Lewis. After watching his wife's battle, Green said, he knew he needed to write about a person who struggled through a serious illness. But because the target age for his books is teen, he needed to tell the story through the eyes of someone that age. When friends introduced Green to Jeffrey Keith, Green knew he had found the right person to help him "capture the heroism that it takes to fight cancer". Cancer-survivor Jeffrey Keith lost his leg to disease at age twelve, but went on to be the goalie( 守门 员)for the Boston College Division 1 Lacrosse(长曲棍球) Team and was also the first amputee to run 3,300 miles across the country. When Green heard Jeffrey keith's story, he knew it was the perfect narrative on which to base his next book. TFK asked Keith what it felt like to read Unstoppable for the first time. "Tim captured what it felt like for me to go through this experience and battle back," Keith said. "After I read the book, Tim asked me to describe it in one word, and I said 'awesome'. Tim's book sends a message to all the kids across the country that are facing obstacles that can have nothing to do with cancer: you are all unstoppable, as long as you believe it." 66. But a new study suggests that calling attention to the words and letters on the page may lead to better readers.

The two-year study compared children who were read in this way in class with children who were not. Those whose teachers most often discussed the print showed clearly higher skills in reading, spelling and understanding. These results were found one year and even two years later. Shayne Piasta, an assistant professor of teaching and learning at Ohio State University, was an author of the study. She says most pre-school teachers would find this method manageable and would need only a small change in the way they teach. They already read storybooks in class. The only difference would be increased attention to the printed text. "If you get children to pay attention to letters and words, it makes sense that they will do better at word recognition and spelling." But she says research suggests that very few parents and teachers do this in a systematic way.More than 300 children aged four and five were observed in classrooms. They came from poor families and were below average in their language skills. For thirty weeks, the children took part in a program called Project STAR — Sit Together and Read. The project is based at Ohio State. It tests the short-term and long-term results of reading regularly to pre-school children in their classrooms. There are different ways that adults can talk to children about print. They can point to a letter and discuss it, and even trace the shape with a finger. They can point out a word and discuss the meaning of the print or how the words tell the story. And they can talk about the organization of the print — for instance, showing how words are written left to right in English. 71. What do we know about the ways pre-school children are usually taught? A. Preference is given to the shape of letters and the organization of the print. B. More attention is paid to the pictures, with words and letters being ignored. C. The focus of the teaching is on bringing them up to be good readers. D. Equal attention is paid to the texts and the pictures. 72. What does Shayne Piasta suggest pre-school teachers should do in class? A. Teach children how to draw pictures to get an idea of what they mean. B. Adopt different methods according to the students' difference in reading skills. C. Change the way they teach and pay more attention to words and letters. D. Read storybooks to children rather than explain the meaning of the pictures. 73. What can be inferred from the passage? A. No immediate benefit will be shown with the new teaching method. B. Children from poor families usually have poor language skills. C. Reading to pre-school children will make them lose interest in reading later. D. Teaching pre-school children letters and words proves a big challenge for teachers. 74. Which of the following is TRUE about the study on language skills of pre-school children? A. Many teachers want to change their way of teaching pre-school children. B. Attention on the pictures has made the children uninterested in reading. C. Teachers are often prevented from taking different approaches to language teaching. D. Project STAR aims to research into the results of reading books to pre-school children in the classroom.

[长难句解读] The reason why Starbucks incorporated one in their company logo is that it was believed mermaids used to sing to sailors in order to make them walk away from their ship or to ground their ships. They try to sell us their products by…" So the mermaid in the logo of Starbucks is the one that‘brings’coffee and tea to the stores." [长难句解读] lf you believe that your talents are inborn or fixed, then you will try to avoid failure al all costs because failure is proof of your limitations.

[长难句解读] If you get children to pay attention to letters and words, it makes sense that they will do beaer at word recognition and spelling. 分析:这个句子使用了 if 引导的状语从句,从句使用了 get sb,to do sth. [解题思路] 由第三段中的"would need only a small change in the way they teach"和 "If you get children to pay attention to letters and words…word recognition and spelling."

76.How to speak English well 77.playing the piano 78.(1)You can increase your vocabulary.(2)You can speak with more skills. 79.Practice. 80.Going to England or other English-speaking countries. 第二节 写作 [范文赏读] A survey about the relationship students and teachers, family members or classmates is being made by a research study group of our school. Generally speaking, we are getting on well with each other. However, there exist some problems. Some students are easy to lose their temper because of anxiety and study hurden .Sometimes they are too self-centered.What's worse, they sometimes quarrel with others, and even turn a deaf ear to their parents and teachers and speak against their parents and teachers, which is very disappointing. In my opinion,we middle school students should make our efforts to improve the situation . First , we should respect our parents and teachers as well as our classmates. Second, when we are not feeling happy, we can have a heart to-heart chat with our friends or teachers or even parents. It is likely that they can understand us better and give us some reasonable advice,
