For two weeks I would try to be a loving husband and father. Totally loving. No ifs, ands or buts. The idea had come to me as I listened to a talk on my car radio. The speaker was quoting a Biblical passage about husbands and their wives. Then he went on to say, “Love is an act of will. A person can choose to love.” To myself, I had to admit that I had been a selfish husband. Well, for two weeks that would change. And it did. Right from the moment I kissed Evelyn at the door and said, “That new yellow sweater looks great on you.” “Oh, Tom, you noticed”, she said, surprised and pleased. Maybe a little puzzled. After the long drive, I wanted to sit and read. Evelyn suggested a walk on the beach. I started to refuse, but then I thought, “Evelyn’s been alone here with the kids all week and now she wants to be alone with me.” We walked on the beach while the children flew their kites. So it went. Two weeks of not calling the Wall Street firm where I am a director; a visit to the shell museum though I usually hate museums. Relaxed and happy, that’s how the whole vacation passed. I made a new promise to keep on remembering to choose love.? There was one thing that went wrong with my experiment, however. Evelyn and I still laugh about it today. On the last night at our cottage, preparing for bed, Evelyn stared at me with the saddest expression. “What’s the matter?” I asked her. “Tom,” she said in a voice filled with distress, “do you know something I don’t?” “What do you mean?” “Well…that checkup I had several weeks ago…our doctor…did he tell you something about me? Tom, you’ve been so good to me…am I dying?” It took a moment for it all to be understood. Then I burst out laughing. “No, honey,” I said, wrapping her in my arms. “You’re not dying; I’m just starting to live.” 56. In the first paragraph, “No ifs, ands or buts” probably means ______. A. Unintentionally B. Independently C. Impressively D. Unconditionally 57. During the two weeks on the beach, Tom showed more love to his wife because ______. A. he was determined to be a good husband B. he had made a lot of money in his Wall Street firm C. she looked lovely in her new clothes D. the doctor said his wife was seriously ill 58. The author says, “There was one thing that went wrong with my experiment.” What does “one thing” refer to?
5

A. He praised her sweater, which puzzled her. B. She insisted on visiting a museum, which he hated. C. He knew something about her illness but didn’t tell her. D. He was so good to her that she thought she must be dying. 59. By saying “I’m just starting to live,” Tom means that ______. A. he is just beginning to understand the real meaning of life B. he is just beginning to enjoy life as a loving husband C. he lived an unhappy life before and is now starting to change D. he is beginning to feel regret for what he did to his wife before B A week ago, I had the great pleasure of reading an e-book, When Money Talks, Listen! By Rich Ezzo. It took only about an hour to read. When I first received a copy, I thought it was a Get Rich Quick type of publication. Nothing is wrong with Get Rich Quick, but my mind just doesn’t chase after dreams of wealth. I think that if God ever wants me to be rich, he knows where to find my purse. When I began reading When Money Talks, Listen!, I was overjoyed to find that Rich Ezzo isn’t money hungry either. He, too, is hungry for more important than money. Since I love this e-book so much, why wait a week to write the review? Simple. I wanted to see if the effect it had on me was a keeper. After reading the last word of the e-book, I totally agreed with the subtitle which promised to forever change the way we thought about money. I had so many thoughts running around my mind that I had to install(安装) a stoplight to stop some while others made their way into the picture, then I yielded(让路) them as a few ones arrived in town. I had a mental traffic jam, which only goes to show how slow the traffic usually is. It has been a week and the effect is the same. I truly do look at money differently and have even done a few things differently this week. This is an e-book you’ll want to read, I promise. I often recommend books to my daughter, and this is one that I didn’t just “suggest”—I left it open at the bottom of the computer and told each one, “Read it, you’ll love it.” I would never point someone in a direction I wouldn’t go myself. I urge you to visit the author’s website, Myster Money, and to download the e-book. You won’t regret it. 60. According to the passage, a Get Rich Quick type of publication ______. A. is what the author really cares for B. deals with how to make money C. is also an e-book written by Rich Ezzo D. is more popular than e-books 61. The author didn't write the review as soon as he finished reading the book because________. A. he was too excited to write anything B. he was not sure whether he did well C. he had to wait for Rich Ezzo's permission D. he wondered if the book would have long influence on him 62. By saying the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4, the author probably _________. A. shows that the book brought him many new thoughts B. shows how bad the traffic is in town C. describes the difficulty in understanding the book D. explains it's hard to change one's attitude to money
6

63. Which of the following is supported by the passage? A. The author had known Rich Ezzo before. B. The author hasn't dreamed of getting rich immediately. C. The author always prefers e-books to paper books. D. The author likes Get Rich Quick-type of publications. C There is a boy called Bill in my gym class who has unbearably yellow teeth that almost make everyone feel unpleasant.Recently another boy told Bill that he should "go Ajax" his teeth.Bill was crushed. If the other boy had been thinking, he would have realized that there is a better way to handle such a situation. He could have dealt with it with tact(技巧) .He could have showed this hurtful truth in a more careful, sensitive way—that's "tact". If a person isn't sensitive to another's feelings, there is no way he or she can be tactful.Yesterday, my 5-year-old brother proudly announced that he had cleaned the screen on our television set. Unfortunately, he used furniture polish, which produced an oily film on the television screen. mother smiled and thanked him for his My efforts—and then showed how to clean the screen properly. Her sensitivity enables my brother to keep his self-respect.Yet, sensitivity alone does not make tact. "Tactfulness" also requires "truthfulness".Doctors, for example must be truthful. If a patient has just been disabled in an accident, a tactful doctor will tell the truth—but express it with sensitivity. The doctor may try to give the patient hope by telling them curing techniques under study or about advanced equipment now available.Doctors must use tact with patients' relatives as well.Instead of bluntly saying, "Your husband is disabled," a doctor might say, "I'm sorry, but your husband has lost feeling in his legs and.." . Tact should not be confused with trickery.Trickery occurs when a nurse is about to give a patient an injection (注射) and says, "This won't hurt a bit. Instead of trickery, the nurse might guarantee the patient that " the discomfort of the injection is a small thing compared to the benefits of it.It would also be thoughtful for the nurse to tell the patients about some of these benefits. Tact is a wonderful skill to have, and tactful people are usually admired and respected.Without tact our society would become an intolerable place to live in. 68. The underlined word "crushed" in the first paragraph probably means____. A.surprised B.cheated C.regretful D.painful 69. According to the author, his mother's praise for the brother is ____. A.sensitive and tactful B.sensitive but not tactful enough C.truthful but not tactful enough D.sensitive but trickish 70. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?

E A refrigerator of the future that tells you what to cook with your leftovers and automatically re-orders fresh food is being designed in the UK.The self-cleaning "refrigerator of the future" will automatically place supermarket home delivery orders when required and move food near its use by date to the front of the shelves. Researchers hope the fridge could clean itself, cut down on wasted food and offer up recipes , which could be tailored to different countries, cuisines and seasons (调味品) With the British spending 36 million hours on . extra-hour work every year, leaving little time for housework, the refrigerator could help save time during busy modern-day lives. These new developments are on the way thanks to combined efforts between scientists at the University of Central Lancashire and online supermarket Ocado. The planned new qualities include the ability for refrigerators to scan their shelves to see what is in store and use this information to both plan meals and automatically place a supermarket food order. The smart fridge will use "nano-articulated(纳米) technology" shelf surfaces, smooth to the touch. The shelf surfaces will have millions of independently controlled micro-tiles (小瓷格) which will move products which soon need to be eaten to the front of the refrigerator.Ultrasound-scanning technology built into the door will allow the refrigerator to "look through" the food on a plate before and after mealtime, meaning it can assess what type and amount of food is wasted. Dr Simon Somerville, an expert from the University of Central Lancashire, said. "Cookbooks are lists of food items. For this purpose the most available information that the refrigerator will have is a set of arrangements that allow a set number of ingredients(佐料) to produce a large number of quite different dishes. The key concept in the successful accomplishment of this process is accurate list tracking." 72. As we can see, some passers-by don’t obey traffic rules and jaywalk frequently. This blocks traffic, seriously affects drivers and causes accidents to happen, endangering the safety of passers-by and drivers. In a word, jaywalking produces negative effects and does not help develop good social behaviour. It is really a pity to see all this in our society. To deal with the situation, the government has taken some measures. When caught jaywalking, the passers-by are criticized so that they will become aware of the dangers of doing so, or they are fined on the spot. Sometimes the traffic police will report jaywalkers at their workplace and expose them to the public. However, it will still take a long time to stop passers-by from jaywalking. We should start from ourselves right now.

第一节(共 5 小题,每小题 1.5 分,满分 7.5 分) (Text1) W: Excuse me, but where do I go for casual wear? M: Move along, and you’ll see the cashier’s counter. Then turn left and it’s right at the end.

(Text2) M: Now, can we get the computer before Wednesday? W: Well, it depends, if it is less than 10 kilometers, we can deliver it on Tuesday, but if it is further away, it will be on Thursday. Where is your office? M: Just around the corner. (Text3) W: Excuse me, sir. Could you tell me how I can get to the city church? M: Are you driving or taking public transportation? W: I drove here yesterday and spent the day driving to all the sights, but today I have decided to go by bus. M: Walk with me. I’m heading in the direction where you’ll be catching the bus you want. The bus conductor will tell you how to change the next bus and where to get off. (Text4) W: I didn’t think much of that performance. M: No. It wasn’t too hot. What a pity, they’re a good group after all. M: I couldn’t hear the lead singer at all. W: Me either. The guitars and drums were too loud. (Text5) M: I’m looking for a textbook for my Sociology course. It’s called American Society at the Crossroads. Do you have it? W: Yes, we do. You will find it in Section 4, on the top shelf. (Text 6) M; Excuse me, miss. Could you tell me the exact time by your watch? W: it’s 9:00 o’clock sharp, sir. M: Why hasn’t our plane taken off yet? W: According to the regulations of CAAC, the departure time on your ticket refers to the time for closing cabin doors, but not for taking off. There are about fifteen minutes before taking off. M: I see. If so, there’re still 15 minutes left for the plane to take off. W: Right your are, sir. Please fasten your seat-belt. The plane is going to take off soon. (Text 7) M: Lovely day, isn’t it? W: Mmm, yes, it’s really warm. And it’s supposed to get warmer. M: Yes, that’s true. You know, though, I’m always a little sorry to see winter go. W: Really? M: Well, I love skating. In fact, I used to teach skating for a living. W: Oh? That sounds interesting. But what do you do now? M: I work at Bank of America. How about you? W: I’m with the radio station. M: Here? W: No, I’m from Chicago. I’m just visiting here for the wedding. M: Oh, I see. W: By the way, I guess I should introduce myself. I’m Helen Keller.
14

M: Nice to meet you. My name is David Brown. (Text 8) W: Hi, Ben, we’re having a party tonight, wanna come and join us? You can bring your girlfriend. M: Well… Actually, Camilla and I are breaking up. W: What happened? Did you have an argument? M; No. She’s really a very nice girl… W: Yeah, she is. She’s pretty, caring, and easy-going. And she’s a great cook! She’s a gem! M: Well, you’re right. But sometimes she’s too caring… Well… no… She’s just possessive…and…uh…I kind of want a break…you know…I need some space for myself. W: Oh?! Did you talk with her about it? M: I’ve tried, but…it didn’t work. M: Oh. So, when are you going to tell her? M: Maybe tonight. I don’t know how to tell her. W: I know she’s head over hells in love with you. She’ll be badly hurt! M: I know… (Text 9) M: Hello, can I help you with something? W: Yes. You see, I’m spending a few days in the city and I’d like to know what’s on. M: Well, there’s a musical, “Elephant fountain”, at Baoli Theatre. They all say it’s very good. W: When’s it on, exactly? M: Every night except Sunday. Hold on, let me get some specific information… Yes, the show will run until the beginning of July. It begins at 8 o’clock, finishing at 10:45. There’s an afternoon performance Wednesday and Saturday. Performances for the afternoon time start at 2:00 and end at 4:45. W: And how much are the tickets? m: Tickets are 80 yuan, 100 yuan, and 150yuan. W: That’s a bit expensive. M: Well, you might get a ticket at a reduced price. It says here. “Some tickets may be sold at half price half an hour before the performance starts.” W: Mm, I’ll think about that. Oh, by the way, is there an age limit for children? M: Generally, not under 7. But this musical is a talk about three children and an elephant. So children are welcome except for babies. Besides, food and drinks are not allowed. (Text 10) In some parts of the United States, farming is easy. But farming has always been difficult in the northeastern corner of the country, which is called New England. New England has many trees and thin, rocky soil. Anyone who has wanted to start a new farm there has had to work hard. The first job has been cutting down trees. The next job has been digging the stumps of the trees out of the soil. Then the farmer has had the difficult job of removing stones from his land. This work of removing stones never really ends, because every winter more stones appear. They come up through the thin soil from the rocks below. Farmers have to keep removing stones the fields. Even today, farms which have been worked on for 200 years keep producing more stone. That is why stone walls are used instead of fences around New England fields. The stones walls are not

high; a man can easily climb over them. But they keep the farmer’s cows from joining his neighbor’s cows.
