When You are Old当你老了
by William Butler Yeats When you are old and gray and full of sleep And nodding by the fire, take down this book, And slowly read, and dream of the soft look Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep; How many loved your moments of glad grace, And loved your beauty with love false or true;

But one man loved the pilgrim(朝圣者)soul in you, 只有一个人爱你那朝圣者的灵魂, And loved the sorrows of your changing face; And bending down beside the glowing bars, Murmur, a little sadly, how love fled(逃走) 凄然地低语,爱为何消逝, And paced upon the mountains overhead, And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

床前明月光, 疑是地上霜;

Abed, I see a silver light, I wonder if it's frost aground. Looking up, I find the moon bright; 是 李 头 Bowing, in homesickness I'm drowned. 3) In the Quiet Night (Tr. Witter Bynner) 故 上 霜。 So bright a gleam on the foot of my bed--乡。 Could there have been a frost already?

1) In the Still of the Night (徐忠杰译) I descry bright moonlight in front of my bed. I suspect it to be hoary frost on the floor. I watch the bright moon, as I tilt back my head. I yearn, while stooping, for my homeland more.

Lifting my head to look, I found that it was moonlight. Sinking back again, I thought suddenly of home.

Do you think the translated works keep the spirit of the original one?
when a poem is translated into another language, its rhythm and rhyme, the figures of speech, etc. are different from the original work. it's changed a bit. That's to say, something of the spirit of the original works is lost.

Welcome to the Garden of poems !

ON THE SEA
John Keats
It keeps eternal whisperings around Desolate shores, and with its mighty swell Gluts twice ten thousand Caverns, till the spell Of Hecate leaves them their old shadowy sound. Often 'tis in such gentle temper found, That scarcely will the very smallest shell Be mov'd for days from where it sometime fell, When last the winds of Heaven were unbound. Oh ye! who have your eye-balls vex'd and tir'd, Feast them upon the wideness of the Sea; Oh ye! who have your eye-balls vex'd and tir'd, Feast them upon the wideness of the Sea; Oh ye! whose ears are dinn'd with uproar rude, Or fed too much with cloying melody Sit ye near some old Cavern's Mouth, and brood Until ye start, as if the sea-nymphs quir'd!

A SOLDIER
Robert Frost
He is that fallen lance that lies as hurled, That lies unlifted now, come dew, come rust, But still lies pointed as it ploughed the dust. If we who sight along it round the world, See nothing worthy to have been its mark, It is because like men we look too near, Forgetting that as fitted to the sphere, Our missiles always make too short an arc. They fall, they rip the grass, they intersect The curve of earth, and striking, break their own; They make us cringe for metal-point on stone. But this we know, the obstacle that checked And tripped the body, shot the spirit on Further than target ever showed or shone.

The Isles of Greece
George Gordon Byron
The isles of Greece! the isles of Greece! Where burning Sappho loved and sung, Where grew the arts of war and peace, -Where Delos rose and Phoebus sprung! Eternal summer gilds them yet, But all, except their sun, is set. The Scian and the Teian muse, The hero's harp, the lover's lute, Have found the fame your shores refuse; Their place of birth alone is mute To sounds which echo further west Than your sires' "Islands of the Blest." The mountains look on Marathon -And Marathon looks on the sea; And musing there an hour alone, I dream'd that Greece might yet be free For, standing on the Persians' grave, I could not deem myself a slave.
