Charlie and the Chocolate Factory 查理和巧克力工厂 书评

Book Report: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, written by Roald Dahl, was published in 1964. And then it became one of the most famous and beloved children's books in the world. I read its Chinese version when I was very young. At that time I just wished I was Charlie so that I could visit the chocolate factory and eat the numerous candies. In fact, the novel impressed me so much that I can still remember the details even after a dozen years. The novel focuses on the adventures of young Charlie Bucket inside the chocolate factory of the eccentric chocolatier, Willy Wonka. One day Mr Wonka announced that he would hide five golden tickets in the ordinary chocolate bars and the five lucky children who found them would be invited to visit his chocolate factory. Charlie was the last one who found the tickets. While they visited the fantastic factory, the other four children lost control for different reasons, and Charlie won the prize – it was Willy Wonka's factory. I think Charlie is the representative of most of the children in the world, ordinary, but happy with what they have. He had a poor family which might not offer him enough food and delicious chocolate, but he never showed any compliment about these, on the contrary, he loved his family deeply. Because of this, he declined Mr Wonka’ s offer of his factory at first, which was at the expense of never seeing his family again. He is really a kind boy. On his birthday, he was willing to share his unique present—— chocolate with his whole family. Meanwhile, now many children are quite selfish and they will never be willing to share what they have owned with the other people including their family. Compared with them, I am really moved by Charlie. In the novel, the other four children all have obvious bad habits. They are also the representatives of some children in the world. For example, Augustus Gloop who found the first golden ticket was a greedy boy and a chocoholic. And Veruca Salt, the second owner of the golden ticket, is a spoiled girl. They all have typical shortcomings. Unable to resist the temptation, they all ignored Wonka's advice and ended up with some ―accidents‖. On the contrary, Charlie succeeded in controlling himself from beginning to end. He followed Mr. Wonka's suggestion and showed a strong

self-control when he saw the amazing chocolate factory. It impressed Mr. Wonka a lot and finally Charlie won the factory. Just like all the fairy tale, I think the novel tries to tell its little readers that kind and obedient children will be rewarded while the wayward and intractable ones will be punished in the end. Besides, in my opinion, this novel also works hard to indicate the value of a warm and loving family, which is much more important than money and dream. Little Charlie’s family are poor, but they are all optimistic about life and they love and care about each other heartily. I believe it’s such a warm family that makes Charlie ― a good sensible loving child‖. Moreover, Charlie’s firm refusal of leaving his family also leads Mr. Wonka to reconsider and finally renew the relation with his father. Then the novel comes to a happy ending just like every fairy tale: Charlie and his family move to the chocolate factory, ―the most wonderful place in the world‖. The author made full use of his imagination and created a lot of funny and amazing things, such as the workers—— Oompa-Loompas,who are no larger than medium-sized dolls and imported direct from Loompaland. What impressed me most is the amazing scenery described by the author. ― They were looking down upon a lovely valley. There were green meadows on either side of the valley, and along the bottom of it there flowed a great brown river.‖ And ―Every drop of that river is hot melted chocolate of the finest quality.‖ When I read the description, I couldn’t help but drool. It also became the most impressive scene in this book to me as a little child. I can still remember that after reading it my biggest dream in the childhood was to have a golden ticket. At that time I just wanted to own one so that I can have ―tremendous delicious eatables‖, which was the greatest happiness to me. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory brings a lot of joy to me in my childhood. When I read it today, I can still find the pure bliss easily. It is my strong belief that even ten or more years later when I read this novel again, I will also be infected by the atmosphere in the book and start to imagine the adventure of little Charlie.
