An animal rights group has named that day as “Black Cat Day” to stop the killing of thousands of the cats. Why do people hate this animal so much? It is because people believe black cats bring bad luck if you see them walking across your path. The black cat is just one of the symbols of superstition(迷信).You may already know that Western people don’t like the number 13.Besides knocking over a salt bottle, they also believe that walking under a ladder, opening an umbrella indoors and breaking a mirror can also bring bad luck. According to Andrew Macaskill, who works for Teens, British people believe it is unlucky to see one magpie(喜鹊).But two bring good luck. “In Britain, people like to have a horseshoe over the door. They believe it can bring good luck.

"Macaskill said. “But the horseshoe needs to be the right way up. The luck runs out if it is upside down.” In the US, people usually spit on a new baseball bat before using it for the first time. They think this can bring good luck. Also, it is believed that good spirits live in trees. She owned and managed three McDonald’s shops in Illinois, but as a divorced mother of three boys, she was desperate for a business that would provide for her children and let her spend more time with them. Her lucky moment came, after she was nominated( 提名 ) in 1992 to be on the McDonald’s bun(小面包) committee. “The company picked me up in a plane to see bakeries around the world,” she recalls. “Every time I went to a meeting, I love it. This was global!” The experience opened her eyes. When McDonald’s decided it wanted a new bun supplier, Harrington was determined to catch the chance, even though she had no experience running a bakery. Harrington studied the bakery business. “If you have a dream, you can’t wait for people to call you,” she says. “So I’d visit a mill(制造厂) and send them photos of myself, holding a sign that say ‘I want to be your baker.’”After four years and 32 interviews, her persistence paid off(得到回报). Harrington sold her shops, and borrowed $13.5 million. She was ready to build the fastest, most automated(自动化的) bakery in the world.
6

The Tennessee Bun Company opened ahead of schedule in 1997, in time for a drop in U.S. fast-food sales for McDonald’s. Before Harrington knew it, she only had the last $20,000, not enough to pay for the employees. And her agreement with McDonald’s required that she sell exclusively to the company. She recalls. “I really did think, I am going to go bankrupt.(破产)” But luckily Harrington worked out another agreement to supply Pepperidge Farm as well, which changed her situation. She says. “That deal saved us.” Over the next eight years, Harrington branched out: She started her own trucking business, a cold-storage company, and now has three bakeries — all now known as the Bun Companies. Speed is still a priority(优先考虑的事): It takes 11 people at the main bakery to turn out 60,000 buns an hour for clients across 40 states, South America, and the Caribbean. Grateful for the chances she’s had, Harrington is passionate about providing opportunities to all 230 employees. Her business keeps going stronger. Cordia Harrington doesn’t have to stand on her feet all day anymore. Two of her three sons now work for her. And she’s remarried. “This is more than a job,” says Harrington. “It’s a mission. I’m always thinking. How can we best serve our employees? If we support them, they’ll do their best to look after our clients(客户). That’s how it works here.” 48. How did she survive the crisis at the start of her bakery business? A. By opening her bun company ahead of schedule. B. By supplying buns for another company. C. By keeping supplies up for McDonald’s. D. By making a new agreement with McDonald’s. 49. Which of the following statements is INCORRECT in describing her current business? A. It is fast growing. B. 第二节 书面表达(满分 20 分) 【参考范文】 Chinese students celebrate their birthdays in different ways, but the most common way is to have fun drinking, singing and dancing. On the birthday, one usually receives nice gifts and good wishes from friends and parents. Sometimes, parents will prepare a special dinner or a cake to show their love for their children. Since birthday celebration is one of the important activities in one’s life, it can be done in more meaningful ways. For example, we can buy some flowers or cook a delicious meal for our mothers on that day. In this way, we express thanks to our parents in return for their love.
