An analysis of the poem” to Helen “
Abstract :The beauty of the poem lies in its linguistic features including phonological features , sound effect and figures of speech . This paper is going to analyze these features in a poem written by Edgar Allen Poe ----- To Helen . Key Words:Edgar Allen Poe , phonological features , sound effect and figures of speech About the author : He was an American writer(1809-- 1849) and has a miserable childhood, then he was adopted by John Allan . And he has an unhappy relationship with his step father and entered the University but didn?t finish. However , he was considered part of the American Romantic Movement. Best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre, he is also considered the inventor of the detective-fiction genre. His works : The Raven 《乌鸦》 To Helen《致海伦》 Annable Lee 《安娜 贝尔· 李》 Sonnet—To Science《十四行诗—致科学》 The Sleeper《睡梦人》 The City in the Sea《海中的城市》 About the poem : the poem consists of three quatrains . the poem is about Helen ,who is the beauty of the old Greece epic and represents the beauty in western ?s mind ,but she is also a commom name .In the first stanza, the poet tells us that the beauty of Helen make the wanderer think of those Nicean barks of yore ,which carry the weary ,way- worn wanderer to his own nation . In the second stanza, it gives us the reason why the wonderer want to go to his own hometown . I n the last stanza , the poet speaks highly of the beauty of Helen . Major theme of the poem : Poe wrote To Helen as a reflection on the beauty of Mrs. Jane Stith Stanard who died in 1824. She was the mother of one of Poe?s school classmates, Robert Stanard. The poem shows that the poet is completely pursue the beauty . Sound effect: 1.End rhyme The poem is built of three stanzas ,each consisting of five lines. The rhyme scheme is , in the first stanza --- ababb ,in the second stanza---cdcdc ,in the third stanza ---effef . There are six end rhymes as follow : 1 [ i:] me sea 2 , /? :/ yore bore shore 3 [?? m]roam home rome 4 [s] face Greece 5 [t? ]niche which 6 [?nd]stand hand land

2 . Alliteration

There is a single and clear alliteration in the third line weary ,way-worn ,wanderer. 3 . Types of foot The meter of this poem is iambic foot, which is one unstressed syllable plus one stressed syllable .each line of the poem includes four foots .so the rhyme of this poem is iambic tetrameter. On des perate seas long wont to roam __ ----- / ______ ------ ____ ------ ___ ------Figures of speech 1. simile There is only one example of simile In the poem ,so we should pay attention to it .in the line 1 and 2 , thy beauty is to me Like those Nicé barks of yore uses an simile .it is a complex and abstract simile whose meaning is that Helen?s beauty is classic beauty . this simile speak highly of the Helen ?s beauty . 2 . Paronomasia In the line 8,” have brought me home “ uses paronomasia . it has two meanings : the first is its literal meaning , that is , his beauty leads me to home . the second , it makes home me understand and deeply feel . 3. Synecdoche In the line 9 , “the glory that was Greece And the grandeur that was Rome” Uses synecdoche . the line uses classic beauty to refer to the whole beauty of Europe .

Conclusion
By brief analysis of the poem “To Helen” I have a deeper understanding of the poem and discover the importance of the application of sound and figures of speech in the poem. I come to realize the great power of nature that may influence our life as revealed in the poem. When we read a poem or other literary works, we should not only focus on their contents but also on their linguistic features.
