It tells about the ups and downs of the Berglund family over many years. Mr. Franzen fills the book with sharp observations about American politics, culture and society. Jennifer Egan's book A Visit from the Goon Squad takes place in 13 chapters over 40 years. The story moves back and forth in time, from different viewpoints. Life is the autobiography of Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards. It is an honest and exciting look at the development of rock and roll and the wild times this famous band has experienced. Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand tells about a man named Louis Zamperini. She tells about his extraordinary survival story after his plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean during Would War Two. Stacy Schiff has received great praise for her book Cleopatra: A Life. It tells about one of the most misrepresented and famous women in his story, Cleopatra. Endangered languages are languages th at wouldn’t exist any longer, much like endangered species of plants or animals. Languages are considered to be endangered when parents are no longer teaching the language to their children and are not using it actively in everyday life. A language is considered to nearly disappear when it is spoken by only a few elderly native speakers. The world faces enormous challenges in order to protect different kinds of languages. Of the more than 6,912 languages, half may be in danger of disappearing in the next several decades. It is caused by many reasons: small numbers of speakers, the regular use of other languages, attitudes towards their languages, moving of the younger population, government policies, and languages used in education and so on. A language may lack important things such as a body of literature, and people who read and write it. A language may also lack prestige (声望) and support of its speakers. The survival of a language is also threatened when speakers move to other areas where different languages are spoken, or when government policies improve the use of a specific language in school, official business and the media. These situations encourage people to learn the wider-known language and may cause them, especially the young, to stop using their mother tongue. Often those speaking lesser-known languages will choose to learn a more prestigious language with the hope of greater economic opportunities. Most of the world’s parents are teaching their children English, French, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Russian or some other main languages instead of their own languages for social and economic reasons. 61.What’s the main idea of this passage? A.Languages in the world. C.What an endangered language is. B.Reasons why languages become endangered. D.Languages spoken by few speakers.

C
I had the meanest mother in the world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal (谷 类食物), eggs or toast. While others had Cokes and candy for lunch, I had to eat a sandwich. As you can guess, my supper was different from other kids' too. But_at_least_I_wasn't_alone_in_my_sufferings. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did. My mother insisted upon knowing where we were at all times. She had to know who our friends were and where we were going. She insisted if we said we'd be gone an hour, then we’d be gone one hour or less—not one hour and one minute. And she always insisted upon us telling the truth. Now you can see how mean she was. The worst is yet to come. We had to be in bed by nine each night and up at eight the next morning. We had to wash dishes, make beds, and learn to cook. We had to wear clean clothes and take a bath, while the other kids always wore their clothes for days. I believe she laid awake at night thinking up mean things to do to us. Through the years, things didn't improve a bit. We could not lie in bed, “sick” like our friends did, and miss school. Our marks in school had to be up to par(达到正常水平). Our friends' report cards had beautiful colors on them, black for passing, red for failing. My mother, being as different as she was, would settle for nothing less than ugly black marks.

As the years rolled by, we were one by one put to shame. We graduated from high school. With our mother behind us, talking, hitting and demanding respect, none of us was allowed the pleasure of being a dropout. My mother was a complete failure as a mother. Out of four children, a couple of us attained some higher education. And whom do we have to blame for the terrible way we turned out? You're right, our mean mother. She forced us to grow up into educated and honest adults. Now I am trying to raise my three children. I am filled with pride when my children call me mean. Because, you see, I had the meanest mother in the world. 66.What does the sentence “But at least I wasn't alone in my sufferings.” mean? A.The author's mother was only mean to her. B.The author's mother suffered her. C.The author's mother was mean to her sister, brothers and her. D.The author wasn't alone because of suffering. 67.According to the passage, the author's mother will ask her children to do all the following EXCEPT_____. A.learn to cook C.go to bed and get up at fixed time B.wear clean clothes D.drink as much Cokes as they want

68.Why was the author's mother mean to her children? A.Because she wanted her children to be top students in school. B.Because she wanted her children to bring home colored report cards like her friends did. C.Because she wanted her children to drop out. D.Because she wanted her children to do their best at school and be educated and respected citizens. 69.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage? A.Some of the children weren't able to go to college because of their mean mother. B.Mother didn't let the author tell lies. C.Mother asked the author to wear clean clothes. D.The author could not miss school even if she was ill. 70.What's the main idea of the passage? A.The kind mother. C.The failure mother B.The meanest mother D.The successful mother

D
As computers become all the more popular in China, Chinese people are increasingly relying on computer keyboards to input Chinese characters. But if they use the computer too much, they may end up forgetting the exact strokes of each Chinese character when writing on paper. Experts suggest people, especially students, write by hand more. Do you write by hand more or type more? In Beijing, students start using a computer as early as primary

school. And computer dependence is more widespread among university students. Almost all their assignments and essays are typed on a computer. All the students interviewed say they usually use a computer. It’s faster and easier to correct if using a computer. And that’s why computers are being applied more and more often to modern education. But when people are taking stock in computers increasingly, problems appear. “When I’m writing with a pen, I find I often can’t remember how to write a character, though I feel I’m familiar with it.” “I’m not in the mood to write when faced with a pen and paper.” Many students don’t feel this is something to worry about. Now that it’s more convenient and efficient to write on a computer, why bother to handwrite? Many educators think differently. Shi Liwei, the headmaster of a famous primary school in the capital said, “Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic (审美的) value. But those characters typed with computer keyboards only maintain their practical value. All the artistic beauty of the characters is lost. And handwriting contains the writer’s emotion. Through one’s handwriting, people can get to know one’s thinking and personality. Beautiful writing will give people a better first impression of them.” To encourage students to handwrite more, many primary schools in Beijing have made writing classes compulsory and in universities, some professors are asking students to turn in their homework and essays written by hand. 71. Which of the following can best serve as the title of the passage? A. The Importance of Handwriting and Typing. B. To type or to Handwrite. C. Writing by Computer will Replace Writing by Hand. D. Practical and Aesthetic Value of Chinese Characters. 72. The students interviewed prefer to write using a computer mainly because __________. A. they can correct the mistakes they make quickly and conveniently. B. they are usually asked to e-mail their homework and essays. C. they found it not easy to remember how to write a character. D. computers have become a trend and fashion in China. 73. Which of the following statements in NOT the advantage of handwriting? A. Handwriting contains the writer’s emotion. B. The writer’s thinking and personality are shown in his or her handwriting. C. Handwriting can impress people well and build one’s self-confidence. D. Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic value. 74. The underlined expression “taking stock in” probably means ___________. A. getting bored with B. getting curious about

C. becoming curious about

D. getting dependent on

75. We can draw the conclusion from the passage that ____ _______. A. more and more students will pay attention to handwriting. B. writing by hand will give way to typing by computer one day. C. more and more students will give up writing on a computer. D. the typing article better expresses one’s emotion and quality.
