English speakers are always creating new words and we are often able to know where most words come from. Sometimes, however, no one may really know where a word comes from. Did you ever think about why hamburgers are called hamburgers, especially when they are not made with ham? About a hundred years ago, some men went to America from Europe. They came from a big city in Germany called Hamburg. They didn”t speak good English, but they ate good food. When some Americans saw them eating round piece of beef, they

asked the Germans what it was. The Germans didn”t understand the question and answered, “We come from Hamburg.” One of these Americans owned a restaurant, and had an idea. He cooked some round piece of bread and started selling them. Such bread came to be called “hamburgers”. Today, “hamburgers” are sold in many countries around the world. Whether this story is true or not, it certainly is interesting. Knowing why any word has a certain meaning is interesting, too. This reason, for most English words, can be found in any large English dictionary. 56. Hamburg is ____________ A. a kind of food B. a round piece of beef C. the name of a village D. a city in Germany 57. According to the passage, ___________. A. few Americans like hamburgers B. hamburgers are made with beef C. hamburgers are made with ham D. hamburgers were first sold about a century ago 58. According to the writer, which of the following can often be found in any large English dictionary? A. Where all the new words come from. B. Where those Germans came from. C. The reason why a word has a certain meaning. D. The reason why English is spoken around the world. 59. From the story, we can know that the word “hamburger” comes from ___________. A. China because it has a long history B. English because Germans don”t speak good English C. The round piece of beef which those people from Hamburg were eating D. English speakers because they always create new words B

Many people will remember the flight of the space shuttle(航天飞机) Challenger, in June, 1993. The achievement of Sally Ride, America”s first woman astronaut to fly into space, made this flight especially memorable. Students from two high schools in Camden, New Jersey, however, are likely to remember Norma rather than Sally whenever they think about the flight. Norma didn”t travel along. She brought about 100 companions(伙伴) along with her. Norma was an ant, a queen ant who, with her subjects, made up the first ant colony (群体)to travel into space. The ants were part of a science experiment designed by the students to test the effects of weightlessness on insects. The equipment designed by the students for their colony functioned perfectly through-out the long space trip. The young scientists and their teachers were very sad to find that their insect astronauts had all died at some point before the container was returned to the school and opened. The problem did not occur in space, but on the ground after Challenger had landed. The container remained in the desert for nearly a week before the ant colony was removed. The hot dry desert air dried out the colony” s container(容器)and the ants died from lack of moisture(水分). The project was termed a success because it did provide useful information. Students will continue their efforts to find out exactly what went wrong. They will try to prevent the same difficulties from recurring on future missions. They don”t want to be discouraged either by the death of the ants or by the $10,000 shuttle fare they will have to pay to send the next colony of ants into space. 60. The story is mainly about ___________. A. Sally Ride”s first ride B. space equipment for insects C. a space experiment with ants D. going to school in New Jersey 61. The project wasn”t a failure because ___________. A. some important things were learned B. dead ants are better C. everything went as expected D. students wrote about it 62. The ants died because _________.

A. weightlessness harmed them B. space caused too much pain C. no one fed them in space D. they dried out in the desert 63. On the next space trip, ants _________. A. will be sent without people B. should not be left in the desert too long C. will have to pay double fare D. will escape the trip completely C Just as the sun is starting to shine and the days are getting longer, the examination period begins! If so, maybe skydiving is for you. It is dangerous, but very exciting. First, skydivers jump from an airplane. Then, skydivers fall quickly toward the ground. Sometimes, skydivers do gymnastics in the air --- for example, they might hold their knees close to their bodies and turn upside down. This is called a flip. Finally, skydivers pull a cord and a parachute opens. The parachute helps slow the skydiver so he or she land on the ground safely. Skydivers usually wear hard helmets on their heads. The helmets protect them so they don”t get

hurt. Sometimes, skydivers are on a team in a competition such as the Olympics. The team works together and does movements in the air. Judges watch the skydivers and give them points for doing amazing things. The team with the most points wins. It”s difficult to see what skydivers do when you”re standing on the ground. Often, people fly in airplanes to make a tape of the skydivers with a video camera. The video camera operator makes a tape of the skydivers. If jumping out of airplanes doesn”t sound like fun to you, there are plenty of other adventure sports. You can always try surfing. Surfers stand out in the middle of the ocean on a long, flat board. Surfers don”t have to worry about jumping out of airplanes, of course --- but don”t forget about the sharks. 68. Why does a skydiver use a parachute? ___________________________________________________________ 69. great interest in acting and began to perform in his high school plays, and he continued acting while attending university. In 1994 and 1995, he was honored with his first and second Oscar as Best Actor for “Philadelphia” and “Forrest Gump” Now he has a happy family with his second wife Rita Wilson, whom he married in 1989. Nowadays, Tom Hanks has become one of the most popular stars throughout the world. I started learning English when I was five years old and now I can speak the language freely. Last year I went to America with a group of people, in which I was the only one who could speak English well. During the trip I did a lot of things to help others. For example, I helped them order dishes in restaurants, buy gifts in shops and ask the way in the streets, so everyone in the group enjoyed the trip. Being a link between the group and the American people, I practiced the language and made many friends.
