In this novel, there are a great number of

Chinese idioms. They are the crystallization of Chinese culture. They are vivid in imagery and they have stable structures, therefore any arbitrary change in the wording or collocation is usually not permitted. Besides that, many Chinese idioms in A Dream of the Red Mansions contain special Chinese cultural information which can not be easily understood by target language readers. Yang Xianyi is a well-known translator, poet, foreign literature research expert, and scholar in literary history. In the early 1960s, Yang and Gladys started translating A Dream of the Red Mansions, suspended the work for some time and eventually completed the translation in 1974. The book was published in three volumes by the Foreign Languages Press in Beijing from 1978 through 1980. Yang was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Hong Kong. Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang address their translation to the foreigners who have much curiosity about and interest in Chinese culture. In a word, the readers of Yang’s translation are some foreigners or experts who are learning Chinese and its culture. Although the translation may fail to gain initial popularity with average reader, it can, in the long turn, play a role in promoting the Chinese culture. In this sense, the Yang’s version focuses more on its introduction of the source culture than on its present-day popularity among readers. A lot of people analyze the translation of Idioms in A Dream of Red Mansions from different angles. Some people analyze the translation of Idioms in A Dream of Red Mansions from the perspective of Equivalence Theory. Translation is an activity that one language is represented in another. Equivalence Theory is one of the important theoretical concepts and practical principles of translation. It aims at transferring all the information in the source language into the target language, achieving the maximal equivalent effects in forms, meanings, styles and image functions. But equivalence is not equal to identity. It is a goal that a translator must strive for rather than identity. From our point of view this theory provides us effective guidance in the process of translating, especially in idiom translation. Equivalence remains a complicated concept in translation and an essential issue in translation circle both home and abroad. In China a large number of works on translation

have touched on the Problem to some degree. For example, in Tang Dynasty the great translator Xuan Zang stated that translation should not only be faithful to the original but also easy to understand. Fu Lei adhered to the principle of “spiritual resemblance” while Qian Zhongshu advocated "the transmigration of souls”, The famous liberator as well as translator Mao 1W n once put forward that literature translation should reproduce the artistic sentiment in the target text, thus making the target readers get the enlightenment and sense of beauty like the original readers do. Lu Xun also pointed out translation could retain the "sentiment" and "charm" of the original, which shows his attention to the concept of equivalent effect. In recent years in the academic circle of translation at home, there is still a heated discussion over the concepts of equivalence and equivalent effect occurred about two decades ago after the introduction of Nida's theory. Zhang Meifang once analyzed the conditions and limitations of Nida's functional equivalence on the basis of Halliday's theory. And Professor He Ziran wrote a book named Pragmatics and English Learning. Pragmatics is one branch of linguistics .He pointed out that the focus of translation lies in pragmatic equivalence and through the pragmatic comparison between the source and target language the translator should represent the intention of the author and make the translation easy for the target readers to understand and accept. From the above discussion we can see that all these translators pay much attention to the problem of equivalence in translation although their theories are far from being mature. In the Western translation circle,British scholar A .Tytler was the first to propose Equivalence Theory. In1790 he wrote in his book Brief introduction of Translation Principles that” good translation is to transfer the advantages of the original language to the other language so that people of the target language can apperceive and feel exactly what people using the original language apperceive and feel.” The Russina-bom American structuralism Roman Jakobson was the first to use the word” equivalence” in translation theory and also introduced the notion of”equivalence in difference.” He approached the problem of the equivalence with the following definition: “Equivalence indifference is the cardinal problem of language and the pivotal concern of linguistics”. At the same time he pointed out that there is ordinarily no full equivalence between co-units. From that time on

equivalence has been the constant theme of translation studies in the West. The American scholar Eugene A. Nida is one of the most important figures in making contribution to the development of Equivalence Theory. He enjoys high reputation of his concepts of formal equivalence, dynamic equivalence and the Principle of equivalent effect. In China,a famous translator Jin Di followed Nida’s theory and on this base He also aired his own views on equivalent effect in his book Exploration of Equivalent Translation Published in 1998. He welcomed Nida’s theory in the late 1970s after more than thirty years of practicing and teaching translation. He stated that the theory of “equivalent effect” is an attempt to define the ideal of the non-existent perfect translation and to explore the approach to approximate in it practice, that is to say, to produce a rendition as close to the ideal as possible. The main principle of equivalent translation is that while conveying the same message, with two different languages, aiming at different receptors, the translator should produce the similar effect to the maximal degree. He also said that the effect includes three aspects which are main spirits, specific fact and atmosphere. And at the same time Jin proposed three important concepts in the equivalent effete theory—the concept of receptor, the concept of effect and the concept of equivalence. Chen Wenbo wrote a book named A Comparative Study of English and Chinese Idioms. This book plays a role of English-Chinese dictionary and can help the readers get a better understanding of the meaning of English idioms as well as its corresponding Chinese idioms. Readers can benefit from reading this book. For one thing, readers can understand the meaning of English idioms in different language environment. For another, Chen Wenbo book impart readers some translation skill of Chinese idioms. In addition, he also analyzes the understanding and translation of Xie hou yu. The whole book has five chapters, including 400 English idioms and 700 Chinese idioms. Among them, the appendix of idioms in A Dream of the Red Mansions is very new and original. In On Translation: new organized by Nida, Eugene A, Tan Zaixi introduces three translation theories: linguistics, communication and Social semiotics, about their definitions and the main category. This book also contains the main translation idea of Nida, Eugene A. In this book, Tan Zaixi introduce the Nida, Eugene A’s translation theory detailed in its

development, stages, content, value and contribution. Zhang Ning wrote a book, Culture Difference and Translation of English Idioms and Chinese Idioms. In this book, he said that idioms are phrases or short sentences that are brief and fixed in forms, concise and expressive in meanings. Idioms have been described as the crystallization of language. They not only have vivid images, stable structures, but also have special information of customs, religions, and geographical conditions of different nations. Chinese idioms consist of set phrases, common sayings, maxims proverbs, and Xie Hou Yu (Enigmatic Folk Similes). Different nations have different idioms. And the idiom has a close relationship of culture. So how to translate the idiom is very different. Zhang Ning tried to translation the idiom by using pragmatics theory. Fernando, Chitra published idioms and idiomaticity in Shanghai foreign Language Education Press. According to the language in real life and a large number of materials in language database, he analyzed the function of idiom and advanced a new view of idiom. He used many vivid and typical examples, put the idiom in the language environment and analyzed the function of idiom in communication: from the simple function of expressing meaning to the function of contact in communication. Baker, M. wrote a book named In Other words: A Coursebook on Translation, the main content is that Essential reading for anyone who teaches translation whether at a theoretical or practical level. This book is very well written in a highly accessible style, and contains material of considerable interest. The varied and excellent examples are a mine of information, the exercises are valuable, and the attitude towards translation is sensibly undogmatic. A remarkable down-to-earth coursebook which is consistently related to real life experience in the translating world. This book addresses the need for a systematic approach to training in translation studies by drawing on key areas in modem linguistic theory and relating them systematically to a number of translation problems and strategies. The strategies are identified by an examination of authentic examples of translated texts in a variety of languages. No knowledge of linguistics or foreign languages is assumed. Each chapter begins with an explanation of the key linguistic concepts referred to and ends with a series of practical exercises. By striking a balance between theory and practice, the book

provides a sound basis for training professional translators. Lefevere. Andre wrote the book, Translation, History, Culture: A sourcebook. The most important and productive statements on the translation of literature from Roman times to the 1920s are collected in this book. Arranged thematically around the main topics which recur over the centuries - power, poetics, universe of discourse, language, education - it contains texts previously unavailable in English, and translated here for the first time from classical, Medieval, and Renaissance Latin, from French and from German. As the first survey of its kind in both scope and selection it argues that translation commands a central position in the shaping of European literatures and cultures. Translation, History, Culture creates a framework for further study of the history of translation in the West by tracing European historical thought about translation, and discussing the topicality of many of the texts included. Andre Lefevere has contributed to Translation/History/Culture: A Sourcebook as an author. Lefevere-Formerly, University of Texas .Andre Lefevere has contributed to Translation/History/Culture: A Sourcebook as an editor. Lefevere-Formerly, University of Texas.
