Abigail Gibbs, 18, who started writing the book aged 14, released chapters of her novel online, where the book eventually received 17 million hits. Harper Collins in Britain has now signed this talented author following her extraordinary Internet success. Miss Gibbs, from Brixham, Devon, who is about to start studying English at Oxford University, is the first author to be discovered on Wattpad. Wattpad is an online library which allows subscribers (用户) to upload or read other people?s stories. Miss Gibbs also said Stephenie Meyer?s
famous Twilight books had influenced her novel, The Dark Heroine. “I read the Twilight and did really enjoy it. At first, my parents were a bit opposed to my writing because I was staying up till 3 a.m. on school nights and they were worried that I might fall behind.” Miss Gibbs finished her book at the age of 16. She posted each chapter after she had written it on the Internet site, until she got to five chapters before the end when she stopped. “I had signed with an agent and he basically said, ?Don?t post anymore so as to keep the readers? anxiety”. That was tough because I disappeared in the site for a year and there were a lot of fans asking where I was. I have had so many requests from fans to upload the last five chapters; some people even said they were going to write their own endings.” Her fans can buy the e-book for ￡2.99, or wait for the paperback book priced at ￡6.99 in shops next month. 21. Her parents didn?t support Gibbs? writing because _____ . A. they didn?t like vampire novels B. writing might influence her studies C. Gibbs spent too much time online D. a possible failure might let Gibbs down 22. We can infer from the text that Gibbs _________ . A. got support from Meyer B. dropped out of school to concentrate on her career C. spent two years in writing The Dark Heroine D. wrote several books before The Dark Heroine 23. Why did Gibbs stop posting the last five chapters of the story online? A. She would rewrite it later. B. She had to finish her university education first. C. She wanted readers to write their own ending. D. She hoped to attract readers? more interest. 24. If a reader wants to read the whole story, he or she___________ . A. may pay for an e-edition B. must wait for about a month C. can buy a paperback in a bookstore now D. can ask for a copy of the manuscript (原稿) B A new word duang is taking the Internet by storm in China - but no one knows quite what it means. The character “duang” is so new that it does not even exist in the Chinese dictionary. But it has already spread like wildfire online in China, appearing more than 8 million times on China's micro-blogging site Weibo, where it drew 312,000 discussions among 15,000 users. On China's biggest online search engine Baidu, it has been looked up almost 600,000 times. It's been noticed in the West too, with Foreign Policy seeing it as a “break the Internet” viral meme - like a certain Kim Kardashian image, or a certain multicoloured dress. But what does it mean? “Everyone's duang-ing and I still don't know what it means! Looks like it's back to school for me,” said Weibo user Weileiweito. Another user asked: “Have you duanged today? My mind is full of duang duang duang.” “To duang or not to duang, that is the question,” wrote user BaiKut automan. “Duang” seems to be an example of onomatopoeia, a word that phonetically imitates a sound. It all seems to have started with Hong Kong action star Jackie Chan, who in 2004 was featured in a shampoo advertisement where he said famously defended his smooth, black hair using the
rhythmical-sounding “duang”. The word resurfaced again recently after Chan posted it on his Weibo page. Thousands of users then began to flood Chan's Weibo page with comments, making the word in reference to his infamous shampoo appearance. The word appears to have many different meanings, and there's no perfect translation, but you could use it as an adjective to give emphasis to the word that follows it. A cat might be “duang cute”, for example. Or you might be “very duang confused” by this blog. For readers of Chinese characters, the Jackie Chan theme is also apparent from the strange way in which the word is written: a combination of Chan's names written in Chinese. 25. What?s the best title of the passage? A. Millions share new Chinese character B. There are many great storms in China C. The Internet has made out new words D. Many try to find ways to stop wildfire 26. What is discussed in the second paragraph? A. The doubt of the word. B. The structure of the word C. The meaning of the word D. The root of the word 27. When Jackie Chan first said duang, he really wanted to _____. A. create an important word B. see his Weibo Page flooded C. praise a kind of shampoo D. play a Hong Kong action film 28. When duang is used as an adjective, it can be used to _____. A. emphasize the word after it B. make other people confused C. combine the users? names D. open China?s micro-blogging C There are an extremely large number of ants worldwide. Each individual ant hardly weigh anything, but together they weigh almost the same as all of mankind. They also live nearly everywhere, except on frozen mountain tops or around the Antarctic. For animals their size, ants have been surprisingly successful, largely due to their wonderful social conduct. In groups that vary in size from a few hundred to tens of millions, they organize their lives with a clear distribution of labor. Even more amazing is how they achieve this level of organization. While we use sound and sight to communicate, ants depend mostly on pheromone (信息素), which is a kind of chemical released by individuals and smelled or tasted by fellow members of a group. When an ant finds food, it produces a pheromone that will lead others straight to where the food is. When an ant comes under attack or is dying, it sends out an alarm pheromone to warn the whole group to prepare for a defensive fight. In fact, when it comes to the art of war, ants have no equal. They are completely fearless and will take on an animal much larger than themselves, attacking in large groups and beating their target. They show so much devotion to their group that not only soldier ants but also worker ants will sacrifice their lives to help defeat an enemy. United and devoted, these little animals have survived on the earth for more than 140 million years, far longer than dinosaurs. Because they think as one, they have a united intelligence greater than you would expect from one small individual ant. 29. We can learn from the passage that ants are__________. A. unwilling to share food B. more successful than mankind
C. not used to living in cold environment. D. too many to achieve any organization. 30. Ants can use pheromones for __________. A. tasting food B. communication C. warning enemies D. arranging labor 31. What does the underlined expression "take on" in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Help out. B. Give in to. C. Show favor to. D. Fight against. 32. Ants have survived for so long mainly because of ____________. A. their social cooperation. B. their large group size. C. their fearless attack. D. their individual intelligence. Scientists are learning more about sleep, but they still know very little about why we dream. 36 First, we have most of our dreams during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. At this time, the brain is very active. Second, everyone dreams, even if we can?t remember doing so when we awake. 37 While we are asleep, it works more slowly and sometimes puts our thoughts and memories together in strange ways. 38 Some believe that our dreams are relevant to thoughts and feelings that we experience while we are awake. Many dreams researchers think that a dream about death, for example, is really about an important life change. 39 A dream about teeth---especially broken or loose ones---may suggest stress or fear. Dreams in which you are flying often represent freedom or escape. Researchers think people in our dreams can tell us something about ourselves. If the person in the dream was yelling, for example, maybe you are angry. 40 There is still a lot about dreaming that we do not understand. By learning more about our dreams, we may learn more about ourselves. A. Dreams may be more important than sleep. B. Scientists do not know for certain why we dream. C. If he or she was scared then maybe you are terrified of something. D. Modern research can tell us some important things about dreams. E. There are three things you should pay attention to to have a sweet dream. F. Finally, a part of our brain helps us to understand daily experience we have. G. I am happy to share my study and life in America. Having been here for a year, I fit in quite well now despite some difficulties. On arrival, the first thing I became aware of here was the language barrier. People don?t talk as they do on our listening tapes. So I enrolled in a preparation course to improve my English. Meanwhile, participating in voluntary work and living with a host family contribute to my communicating skills. Secondly, I had to adapt to the academic requirements, which are totally different from those in China. Having failed several times, I found it necessary to learn autonomously to find ways out. My life is a lot easier now. In many ways my experience has urged me to work harder and become more independent. How?s your life lately? I am looking forward to your reply. Yours, Li Jie 录音稿
(Text 1) M: I bought a watch last week. Usually the watch sells for $200. But they cut the price by 30% that day. W: You were so lucky. (Text 2) M: Another great party. Nina has great taste in music. W: The food was really delicious, too. But I look forward to her parties because she always invites such a large group of friends. (Text 3) W: Let?s get started on the report now. M: It?s such a beautiful day. Can?t we go for a walk first? W: No, we?ll need to return these books to the library by 5:00. We really have to do this now. M: OK. (Text 4) M: Hi, Julia. This is Mike. I?m meeting you at the bus station tomorrow. What do you look like? W: Well, I?m slim, and I?ve got black hair. It?s waist-length. I?ve got green eyes. And you? M: Er, I?m tall, with short red hair. (Text 5) W: Many people say it?s good. But I think it?s boring! M: I don?t think I share your view. The writer is writing about history, society, human nature and so on. It tells a story of real life. (Text 6) M: Hello. I?ve just been given a room, room 112 I think it is, but I?m afraid it?s really very unsuitable. It?s extremely small and I can hear the people in the next room. I really feel that with the prices you?re charging the rooms should be much better than this one. W: Ah, I?m sorry to hear that. I?ll ask the porter to show you another room and if you find it suitable we can move you. M: Thank you.
(Text 7) M: There are lots of good things on at the moment. My mum?s going to see a dance show on the square on Saturday afternoon. We can go with her. W: Oh, boring. And I don?t like going to things like that in the afternoon. M: Well, there is the rock festival in the park. I like listening to music outside in the summer. But it ?s very expensive. W: Mm. I?ve only got $5. M: Well, would you like to go to the new nightclub? I went there last week on my birthday. It?s only $4 before 11. We can go on Saturday. W: I?d really like to go to the rock festival, but OK then. Shall we meet at your house? M: Yeah. About 9? W: See you then. (Text 8) W: Hi, I?m Cindy. This is my first day here. M: Hi, I?m Francis. I?ve been here for a week. It?s not a bad place to work. W: Yeah? M: It?s very different from the job I had last summer in a factory. That was really tiring work. At least here we only have to carry a few plates. W: Is everybody friendly here? M: Well, the older waiters aren?t really interested in the same kind of things as students doing a holiday job like us. But they?ll chat to you when they have time. That waiter over there used to play football for Arsenal when he was young. He?s got a friend who sometimes gets free tickets. I?m an Arsenal supporter. W: Really? Me too. There?s a match on Wednesday evening which will be really good. M: I?m not sure if I can go. Oh, there are some customers over there who are waiting for a table. Come on. Let ?s go. (Text 9) M: So, Anita, have you always been interested in ice-skating? W: Since I was a very small child. I was lucky that my mother was also a professional ice-skater and she was able to teach me, so I don?t have to pay for a teacher. But sometimes I couldn?t enter competitions as we didn?t have the money for the special clothes. There was a sports stadium near my home. That helped when I was practicing before school. M: You do shows on ice, don?t you? W: Yes. Our tours last for ten months, so I?m working all year except during the summer. M: What?s the hardest thing about the job? W: Lots of people miss their family but I don ?t have children and I visit my parents on my free days. In fact, I find the long practices before a show really hard. M: What is the most important skill for a successful ice-skater? W: Well, you have to be a very strong skater of course — I mean you have to be able to laugh at yourself — you?re often wearing very silly clothes and occasionally you fall over. (Text 10) M: One of the most successful supermarkets in Britain is Sainsbury?s. In 1869, John James Sainsbury and his wife opened a small shop selling fresh milk, butter and eggs in London. Other products like meat and vegetables weren?t introduced until later. The shop became well known because, in spite of the food being of higher quality than that at other shops, the prices were not higher. Working conditions in nineteenth-century shops would seem hard to us but Sainsbury?s workers were well looked after. In return, they had to work long hours. In fact, Saturday evening was often the busiest time. After closing, the shop had to be cleaned and tidied and it could be after 2 a.m. before the workers were able to leave. By the 1920s, the design of many of the shops had changed and a typical Sainsbury?s shop had six departments offering a much wider range of products than other food shops. Each shop offered home delivery throughout the surrounding area. This service came to an end during the 1960s as people had their own transport but has become popular again with the 21st century since people started ordering their food on the Internet and having it delivered. In 1974, Sainsbury?s first out-of-town supermarket opened on the edge of Cambridge and today most towns in Britain have a Sainsbury?s nearby.
