General
This standard agrees with SIS 162221, issue 2, which is based on ASTM D 1329-60, but does deviate in details. This standard stipulates a method of determining the temperature at which a certain recovery to original length takes place by a piece of elongated and frozen rubber.

V?tska som inte n?mnv?rt p?verkar det gummimaterial som skall provas f?r anv?ndas. 1.3 Stativ med belasningsanordningar, h?llare f?r en eller flera provkroppar och l?sanordningar f?r de ?vre, r?rliga provkroppsh?llarna (figur 2). Stativet skall dessutom vara f?rsett med utbytbara skalor graderade p? s?dant s?tt att ?terg?ng till ursprunglig l?ngd direkt kan avl?sas i % av f?rl?ngningen vid nedfrysning. De ?vre, r?rliga provkroppsh?llarna skall vara f?rsedda med motvikter, s? att provkropparna belastas med 0,010,02 MPa. Apparaturens r?rliga delar skall vara utformade s? att minsta m?jliga friktion uppst?r.

1.1 Container for cooling fluid. The container must be insulated and fitted with an agitator, temperature gauge with grading ?C, and a means of heating the cooling fluid. 1.2 Cooling fluid and crushed dry ice. Suitable cooling fluids include methyl alcohol and ethanol. Fluids which do not have any significant effect on the rubber material to be tested may be used. 1.3 Stand complete with means of applying pull, holder for one or more test pieces with lock mechanisms for the upper pieces, movable test piece holder (Fig. 2). The stand shall also be fitted with exchangeable scales graded to permit the original length to be read off in % of elongation when frozen. The upper, movable test piece holders shall have counterweights so that the test pieces can be loaded by 0.01-0,02 MPa. The moving parts of the apparatus shall be designed to give the lowest possible friction.

3.1 The temperature for elastic recovery shall be determined on at least three test pieces from the same specimen. The cooling fluid in the container shall be sufficient to stand at least 25 mm above the test pieces. With the agitator operating, the fluid is cooled to below -70?C using dry ice. 3.2 The test piece is mounted in the frame and elongated 250 %. If the test piece fails before 250 % elongation, a new test piece is mounted and elongation is reduced in intervals of 50 % until failure no longer occurs. This is then used as the specific elongation for the test. O-rings are elongated 50 % unless stated otherwise. 3.3 While the liquid is cooling, the test piece at room temperature is mounted in the test piece holders. The test piece is then elongated to the above degree of elongation after which the upper holder is locked in a position which brings the upper test piece holder level with the dividing line 0 on the elongation scale. 3.4 When the fluid has attained a temperatur of -70?C, the frame with test pieces is lowered into the fluid. After 10 minutes in the fluid at a temperature between -70?C and -73?C, the upper test piece locking mechanism is released so that the elongated test pieces are free to return to original length. At the same time, the temperature of the fluid is increased by 1?C per min. Should the elongated test pieces revert to original length at -70?C, a new cooling fluid, which permits a lower temperature, can be used. 3.5 Recovery is read off first at -70?C and thereafter every other minute. The readings of recovery to original length and the prevailing temperature are plotted on a diagram showing recovery relevant to temperature.
